Hopefully all will come obvious soon!
Why not hinges by the way? I'm just curious. I feel like I'm missing something.
You should consider using rangefinder binoculars and have some fun.

The point of the lid is to protect the arm/cartridge and reduce the amount of dust on the turntable.
When I listen to a record I take the lid off as I feel they sound better without it on.
So, hinges are not needed as the lid will be fully removed when I use the turntable.
