Works stuck the boot into my plan to make the visit.
I was looking forward to it, done a long round trip last week to have the Tonearm and Cartridge set up correctly. I was amazed at what I learnt on this excursion.
Had a new phonostage to bring along as well, to put out against Britains finest .

I so want to join in. I have something pretty special TT wise to present and want to do it, but frankly, Halifax is a step too far from Bristol, especially as I’d be on my own for the journey there and back. I don’t handle this sort of stuff so well these days, especially doing it on my own. Sorry, David, I’m going to have to step out on this one. The travelling requirements are in this case a step too far. In the future with a buddy, I have no doubt It could be good. The disappointment is that I have a TT that needs assessment and that opportunity will be missed. Let’s hope we can make it happen some time in the future.
I hope you have a great day, and please don’t allow all the nonsence around phono stages to spoil your agenda. If I was Alan, I would simply ignore the challenge. Who needs a bake off? He needs a bake off. No-one else gives a toss. Don’t bake off. End of.

Thanks to David for hosting yesterdays event.
I was mostly underwhelmed by the choice of music, so did not really know how to evaluate the equipment.
The phono stage "battle" was (in my opinion) a draw, so neither Richard nor Alan can have bragging rights.
Nice to see some old, and new faces in the audience, I should have spoken more to those I didn't know so my apologies.
And I enjoyed the train ride.

I wasn't there but I know the music. It's great stuff, IMO far superior musically to the usual audiophile boring stuff, but it's possible to for it to be termed as "plinky plonk bollocks" to coin one of Richard's phrases.
Mind you I can't talk. My choice of the jazz group Speedometer, doing Ramsey Lewis doing Pharrel Williams "Happy" as my opening track at Owston was regarded as "interesting" one or two people. I think it is a fantastic track musically but acknowledge that it is a bit lo-fi with an insistent ride cymbal that sounds both dull and hard at the same time due to a lack of upper harmonics; probably done on purpose to get a 60s pop sound.
Perhaps not a tune to show off a pair of speakers with.
Sgt. Baker started talkin’ with a Bullhorn in his hand.

Any info on the turntables that were brought along ? I couldn't make the meet, so it would be nice to know what I missed.
How did the Phonostages compare to the Music First Reference, if the Music First was used.
I have a indelible memory of this stage surpassing most of the stages that were auditioned before it, it was presenting a performance in a way that did not sound like it could offer any thing else in SQ and control.

Pleased everyone had an enjoyable day, wish I'd been there. Greg, I'm sure you could have taken a couple of lp's.
Make it Sunday next time Dave.

We used a Clearaudio Master Innovation to start with, with their own 12" universal arm fitted with a DH3 cartridge, roughly £30,000 worthJohnG wrote: ↑Mon Aug 13, 2018 6:53 pm Any info on the turntables that were brought along ? I couldn't make the meet, so it would be nice to know what I missed.

Next up was my Garrard 401 in a Carl Ellis plinth fitted with a 12" Jelco arm and a rather splendid high output MC cartridge from Acoustical systems called The Archon which goes stright into Nick's ref phono stage without the need of a SUT.
Then we used my Technics SL1200 with external PSU, fancy bearing, SME 3009 arm and a Benz cartridge.
No phono stage I have heard so far anywhere sounds better than NIck's reference one.

How did the turntable setups compare? Huge difference in cost I'd imagine.
