The last set of classic boxes I built was in 1975.
They each had an EMI 13x8 elliptical speaker, with two cone tweeters mounted on a bar running across the front of the driver and had crossovers with them. Can't remember what they sounded like.

You've just reminded me, I was tempted to buy a pair of the 9"x7" Saba greencones a while back. Still wonder what they sound like.

Going to have to re-think the grilles.
The Fender material is made of varnished cotton, which is extremely stiff and is almost impossible to bend around a conventional type of frame.

It looks as if what you are meant to do, which makes perfect sense now I think about it, is mount your driver from the rear of the baffle, then attach the grille flat to it and put a frame of beading around to hide the edges, which is the way they did it in the 50s and 60s and still do with guitar amps.

The frame then for a front mounted driver will be a bit more complex to make. Bah humbug!

Would it bend if you warmed it up?

That could be an option, I'll have a go later on.
Cheers Ali.

Use a hairdryer on the high setting just on the edge where it goes round the grill frame

Got these speakers up here today during a rare period of quiet in this house.
Kids and missus went out to Elsecar Park with their nannan, so I had the house to myself.

So got him to fetch them up

They didn't seem particularly bothered by the fact that they were in a space nearly 3 times the size, maybe losing a gnats of extension because of the lack of a wall on the right where the open plan goes from living to dining room. Difficult to tell.

They are very even from top to bottom and don't need a tweeter to fill the top in at all. Still not sure how fane managed to get the dispersion of the 2 wizzers so well integrated.

They sounded great on the end of the f5.

No flab on them at all which is a nice change from ports.

I played a lot more stuff through them than I expected, had them here for a couple of hours and none of my go to tracks showed anything other than an even response from top to bottom.

I like them and I might build some.

Aye, an enjoyable couple of hours with the vinyl.
Transporting the speakers showed that at least I can get them in the car, not that there is much room for anything else
May have to revise what to take with the speakers to Owston, unless I can get crafty with the packing order.

No point startng a new thread, as it will be an age before anything happens, but I've just pushed the button on a 2 pack of the FANE, full range 15-300-TC, 15 inch, triple cone driver.

Can't remember whether I said this earlier but the 12" cabinets work very well in corners.
In the near future, after I have done some outside work and painting on the back dormer window, we are going to remodel the front room.

The idea with the 15" full range drivers, is to make a pair of 100L corner cabinets and fit them in the room corners as a semi-permanent fixture. They will obviously not be portable, so no chance of them ever going to a meet, but they will provide the musical entertainment for the rest of my natural at any rate. :)

Should be enjoying hi-fi the way it used to be, by Christmas at the earliest.

The 12" speakers will be passed on to our Ant once the 15s are in place.

Three weeks down the line and the things are still running in.
I expected this, so it's no surprise.
Earlier this week, it was like Donovan's "First There is a Mountain"

"First there is a bass sound,
Then there is no bass sound,
Then there is.

Fascinating. :)

Moved from the 15" Fane thread as it's more relevant to the 12" one.
The 15 is vaporware at the moment.
chris661 wrote: Mon May 14, 2018 8:38 am No problem, I'll be taking an amplifier to Steve's. Probably something large and solid-state. Hope the mains supply is up to it... :D

Looking forward to hearing these!

Yep, should be a good session. If anyone else near me wants a listen, it's hopefully going to be on Sat afternoon 19th May.
Can't emphasise this too often though. FFS don't come expecting thunderous lows or disappointment is inevitable. These are music speakers not home theatre effects boxes. :)

Yep, this Saturday afternoon.
You're welcome to turn up Dave, no probs. :)

It'd be brilliant to hear an OTL amp through them.
I feel an NVA vs pro vs OTL bake off coming up

Hmmm, now I'm thinking about bringing a different amp, but the fans are a little noisier. Crown MA12000i, anyone?

See you both on Saturday.
