#1 Fane 12-250TC Retro Speaker.

Post by Cressy Snr »

Right then!
I have two new speakers under development, the first one is a bigger omni, using the Faital Pro 10FE200 but I'm not going to detail that build, as we've been through all that with the six incher, and the process is no different.

No, this one is a right back to basics, high efficiency, 12 inch, full-ranger of the point and squirt variety with the full range driver housed in a big, sealed box. It will be my trademark tapered box shape, with sloped sides and front panel, so it won't look too big in a normal room.

Once done, and voiced to my satisfaction, it'll be the one coming to Owston, along with the Pink SET.
The cab will be styled to match the SET.

I'm going to really enjoy this utterly simple, no frills build.

Watch this space. :)

Good man. Watching with much interest re both designs & will look forward to hearing them. Cabinet styled to match the SET? Does that mean it will henceforth be known as the Pink Panther?

If it isn't a daft question though Steve -why is the big one 'squirting'? That's a genuine question BTW, because I've spent a while considering it, and I can't find an acoustic analogy between a moving coil drive unit and 'squirting' so would like to understand. As far as I am aware, a squirt is a jet / jet-like stream of fluid (be it liquid or gaseous), but that's not what a moving coil drive unit creates. At low frequencies output from a cone tends toward 2pi radiation (since we can't eliminate the floor  ) At higher frequencies the dispersion pattern tends to narrow (the details depend on the cone, suspension & baffle geometry -something like a flat BMR or the flat TB cones for e.g. do so significantly less than a deep, steep-walled cone for obvious reasons, although they have their own issues), but that isn't a 'squirt' either.

I've had a recent urge to get back to basics. I did it with the pink SET; yes I know it's three stages but the basic thing is very simple and has produced the best sound I've had from valves. I think that the real spirit of the music lives within these simple structures.

This 12 inch full-range project aims to get the music out without anything between the amp output terminals and the driver.
Yes, we've all been there with full-rangers and we all know what horrible, stentorian shriek boxes they can be, but there have been plenty of good reports about the this Fane triple cone driver; I have a pair doing nothing, so what the hell.

All I'm doing with this one, is to go with the suggested sealed box off Blue Aran as a basis for my own take on it. The suggestions translate to a 20x30x12 inch box. I will keep the 12inch deep dimension, but the cab will taper upwards from the 20 inch wide base and will need to be a bit taller than 30 inches to account for the taper whilst keeping the right box volume. The only parallel sides will be the top and bottom.

The speaker will sit on a hardwood plinth with four tapered legs, of a similar 'fifties type profile to those fitted to the QUAD ESL57 and the old Tannoys.

Sealed box 12" , looking forward to this :D
edit : so , having looked at the driver it has quite a rising response from 1k to 10k - have you a plan to deal with this ?

I'm guessing the driver won't be pointing straight at the listener ... ?

Did a test run with the bare drivers, using a variety of music.
They are clean and clear with an excellent treble tone. Resonse falls off-axis, but that is not a problem. Get them angled correctly and the response flattens out nicely, to give an even sound that goes right up there. Vocals promise to be very good. These really don't need a tweeter, not with my aging ears anyway.

Bodes well with a 100L cabinet, I think.

I'm not doing it - too small a room; but these drivers would IMO, do really well on an open baffle running wide open, with a 15, or better still, an 18 inch bass helper underneath them.

I'd be interested to see what size they were going to be Steve, I'm still thinking about my 12" drivers in a semi omni.

I really had no idea what those are, until I looked them up. First thought was they might be Donald Trump's grandchildren or something !
