Colin Chapman was only a little bloke and tended to build cars that fitted him. At college I had a good friend who had his heart set on a Lotus 7. When another friend turned up with one my mate asked to have a go. He was 6’ 4”, and found it completely impossible to get in. I’ve never seen anyone look so crest-fallen.

I'm 6' 4" and there are precious few sports cars I can drive.

A good mate had a Caterham 7 (Lotus 7) which I helped him build.

I couldn't even get my legs fully into the driver's footwell.

The only Caterham folk my size can get in is the SV.

I have to confess I have nothing to add to this thread...

except

being the ornery sod that I am....

the thread is about zero emission road vehicles...but most of the content is anything but zero emission stuff....

I did like that interview with the chap that had an electric vehicle with lead acid batteries under the bonnet though...if all the people that drive around alone in those huge SUV bus type motors were forced to drive one of those circa 1977 electric jobs we'd still be waiting for global warming to occur...and don't get me started on the school run.......I know it's personal choice and all that, but!

I was reading an article about fires in waste recycling plants caused by disposed Li batteries that people incorrectly put in general waste.

The article then goes on to discuss safety on EVs, particularly when accidents occur.

We have a friend who is a local retained firefighter... he says their worst worry is being called to an EV crash - although the vehicles have a "kill" switch for the power, if the pack itself is compromised then the situation can be very very dangerous - far more so, he says, than with petrol.

The reason why Royal Mail (and some couriers) will not accept any parcels for shipping that contain any lithium products especially Li-Po or Li-Ion battery packs.

I've just been watching a video (from USA) where they couple two electric motors in tandem with a 2 speed + reverse Powerglide transmission (minus torque converter) and it gives 1,000ft/lb of torque.

So, electric hot rods.

They do seem to be obsessed with power and nothing else in the US.

Oh yes, but it also seems that brakes and suspension are becoming as important. They do have corners on some roads.

I remember seeing some discovery channel program about so-called street racing in the USA (seemed very set up).

However, they were serious power and speed freaks.

Then two guys came along in a stripped out Tesla (otherwise a standard production car) and burnt them all - stupid acceleration and control (no wheel spin).

Yeh, the Tesla was silent - no flames or nitrous, no drama....

...but it was very very quick over a standing 1/4...

I didn't get all the way to the end of the video....dinner interfered.....but...

I did watch click at lunchtime and that focussed on the current mining investigations in Cornwall, which indicate that we may be best placed in Europe to produce lithium in the future...which feeds into the whole picture...it seems Our Cornwall lithium is not as pure as the Aussie stuff but we may have loads more of it...mmmm...I reckon the biggest hurdle will be how to satisfy all those people without a driveway....
It's all very well saying if you can't charge at home then charge at work......but maybe you don't have a work......theres gonna be a whole new bunch of second class citizens...forced onto the bus....maybe....
