I thought we fixed that. Well we did in my head at the time but that might not have been too rational! A pie has to have pastry all the way round. Small casserole dishes with pastry caps don’t count. Nigel’s pie on Saturday night was a chicken and ham soup with a pastry cap. That’s really wrong. Same with puddings. A proper steak and kidney pudding must be made and steamed in a basin when the suet mixture surrounds all sides with the snake and pigmy well sealed inside. End of. The debate stops here!

Why have a forum ? Just ask Greg and accept his answer.

I don't remember putting Greg in charge over the weekend, but I am sure he will let me know if I did.

What about shepherds/cottage pie..?
If pastry is all the way round, what separates pies from pasties?
FWIW, I do agree that pies ought to have pastry all the way around. There are some things that need ironing out, though.

A 'pie' with just a top crust on is a 'lazy pie'. It's what my mother used to do most of the time, just because it was quicker and used less materials probably. But I'm pretty sure that when she did egg & bacon pie (aka, what we call nowadays a 'quiche Lorraine') it did have a base too.

but what about the tree in the forest?
I forgot to ask, did anyone bring up the question on Friday night?
pies are hugely unimportant when considering the tree conundrum

Hmmmm...
From wiki...Pies are defined by their crusts. A filled pie (also single-crust or bottom-crust), has pastry lining the baking dish, and the filling is placed on top of the pastry but left open. A top-crust pie has the filling in the bottom of the dish and is covered with a pastry or other covering before baking. A two-crust pie has the filling completely enclosed in the pastry shell. Shortcrust pastry is a typical kind of pastry used for pie crusts, but many things can be used, including baking powder biscuits, mashed potatoes, and crumbs.
Pies can be a variety of sizes, ranging from bite-size to ones designed for multiple servings.

Why not?

No he's not! Greg describes using suet - suet is used in puddings so what he describes is a steak and kidney pudding not a pie.mainscablesrus wrote: ↑Mon Jun 03, 2019 9:18 pm Some questions have an obvious answer, Greg is 100% correct.
