Whilst at Eden Camp in the week I stumbled on a chap re-assembling a bike. It transpires that the museum was sold a 1940s BMW combo with war use provenance.It came to pass, after some detailed research, that said bike was 1957/58 painted german army and having transfers applied to the speedo. It now has authentic provenance.

I also met a kind chap restoring a Sherman Tank, who gave Seb a personal tour. This tank had a glorious history which the chap has meticulaously chased up. It's seen battle in four or five conflicts after wwII and was sold by the Americans to the French, by the French to the Israelis and consequently to other countries, all the while having increasingly more redundant equipment fitted....a must to visit for tank geeks.

Its a good day out for families. My kids liked the smells most.

I was told that Tacla Taid approximately translates to "grandfather's things", there being no direct English equivalent for "Tacla".

That flat exhaust flare is really going to horn-load the cylinders down to a pretty low frequency.

I think the official name was a fish tale. I remember many years ago reading Phil Irving's Tuning for Speed and the effect of a tuned exhaust system on performance was very well known at the time.

Well, that's what I originally thought when it was on vintage pattern block-tread tyres, but since old Balthazar has been on his new (don't laugh!) Pakistani tyres (less than £60/pair), the road-holding has improved dramatically. These new tyres are surprisingly good - although I wouldn't put them on my faster bikes. Frame rigidity is barely distinguishable from a rubber band at very low speeds but once over, say, 20, things improve dramatically and the machine becomes great fun.

Dave - thank you for thinking of me. One doesn't often see Nimbi in this country - this one must have been visiting from Holland and its fine condition seems to have won it a prize. It is a 1935 - 1947 model. This can be determined from a number of characteristics, principally from the "Napoleon" front mudguard, so called from the shape of its profile and the "low forks" which had the spring gaiters at the bottom of the sliders rather than the post 1948 models having the "high Forks" with the gaiters in the now usual place. Norra lotta people know that.

Interesting comment about the saddle springs. From 1934 to 1950, they were all wound in one direction. From 1950, coil springs were replaced by heavy rubber bands which worked surprisingly well, although they do get caught out by all the bloody pot-holes in current British road surfaces. Only coil springs were fitted in conjunction with the high exhaust (as in the photos). However, I shall make a point of inspecting other old bike seat springs to see if they are handed. I really need to get a life but I suspect I might have left it a bit late.

And yes, the correct terminology continues to be "fishtail" and the design has been a feature of tail pipes from the earliest times. Difficult to tell whether it back-loads the horn system to any degree is debatable as the fundamental frequency is remarkably low to begin with and as the valves bounce at 4,500 rpm, it barely gets to mid-range. Perhaps if I stick it front of my Autographs, I could get things down to 15 cps.

"Fishtail" may be current but what I remember as a "bellmouth" has morphed into a "velocity stack" which, even making allowances for inflation and a no-deal Brexit, must be worth another 20 mph.
