No experience at all, other than with an ancient New Imperial I used to thrash around the farm when I was little. But I don't think that counts.
I remember watching Dave Bickers, Arthur Lampkin and Jeff Smith on 't Saturday afternoon telly years ago and thinking this off-road stuff might be fun, but living in London at the time, the opportunities for engaging in these activities didn't exist. A couple of years ago when I was temporarily bike-less, a friend lent me his BMW with 650 Rotax engine. I needed a ladder to get aboard and couldn't get on with it at all. I knew about the NX650 and wondered why Honda should so obviously copy Norton's 88 and 99 (no flake, thank you) Dominator designation. As you know, the Honda 500 and 650 engines share a common heritage and power output.
Anyway, I'm really a wannabe road racer with short legs, so anything with a 21" wheel isn't on my list. I'm booked to go to the Island in September and hope that Boris has got his arse sufficiently into gear by then to allow some degree of what is a fading memory of normality and I shall be able to again imagine I'm Jock West on the Porcupine or Reg Armstrong on a cammy Norton as I thunder past Kate's Cottage doing the ton on my Mike Hailwood Replica . . . . . . . . .
