If you've got enough of a hole to use a good sized stud extractor then a bit of heat works wonders.

Thing is you need the heat concentrated only on the boss, so a blowtorch may not be the best way. An oxy/acetylene flame is better as the heat is more intense (hotter) and can be kept more local.

Pity that the Covid restrictions stop me coming over with my "bottles".

Quick update on this...

So using these...

I made uh 'ole...

Hmmm, only semi-successful.

I skewed off-centre a bit and hit what I think was the end of an old drill bit that a previous owner had managed to leave in the outside face of the stud I'm guessing when they tried to remove it after snapping off the Rider's rear brake foot peg during an oopsie. It took me by surprise and I snagged my bravest drill bit, I need to BluTack my lovely 3mm TCT drill back together...

If I can get summat like an 8 or 9mm TCT tip drill through the rest of the stud/boss thingyum I'm hoping I can fit part number 13 from here -> https://www.hitchcocksmotorcycles.com/p ... k-pages/82 into that hole once I've made it bigger (and straighter) if possible.

The Redditch Bullet was much more 'complete' compared to this scraggy pile of bits. Many more challenges with this project. Don't even ask about the state of the crankcases.

Did I mention the crankcases?

They're 'orrible... the whole top of the crankcases were covered in that mess, here's another before and after picture, guess which side I've cleaned?

Areas of damage, the nasties...

Cracked...

Cracked sump plug drain...

Nasty gouges...

Snapped orf...

Badly scratched but I don't think it has an impact on anything...

I've got the circlip out nice and cleanly though on the inside of the LH crankcase with a view to drifting out this 6207 Bearing. I'll heat the casework 1st before attempting to drift the bearing out. Then perhaps I should decide on what to do and perhaps who to see about saving this side of the crankcase?

I've found more damage in a really annoying place too, deep inside the 'oil tank' compartment at the very bottom of the crankcase, its breached open. Looks like someone has either fitted too long a case screw or drilled too deep if they were trying to helicoil/rethread the fixing position on the otherside of the primary side casing...

Erks...

Its definitely breached, I can squirt WD40 down the threaded hole where the fixing would screw into on the other side and see it seeping into the oil compartment. Bum.

Sounds like you need to seek out a specialist repairer Dave. Do you get Classic Bike magazine (or similar) ?

If so look in the classified ads and see if there are any local to you.

Many years ago (when I were a lad) I was rebuilding the engine on a Kawasaki KLR650, and the cylinder head was a real mess. I sent it away (can't remember where) and it came back fully serviceable, it's amazing what proper experts can do.

Agreed, I need a proper grown-up to have a look at these faults and damage, I'll start asking about when the world starts getting back to normal.

Yep, I bought last month's copy as its had a small feature on an RE GT250, the pictures are a reasonable size which is handy to see what it 'should' look like one day, I've never actually seen one of these in the flesh. Old Bike Mart seems good for peeps offering services too, I used a company to re-line the brake shoes on the RE Bullet last year.
