I have to say, out of all the things it is possible to solder, audio cables are the most frustrating and thankless in my opinion. With the finished article you just don't see how much effort went in to avoid everything going all melty. Fiddly work indeed.

Possibly only worse than that were those horrid DIN connectors of old. yuk.

They care a bugger, I agree.

The world looks so different after learning science. For example, trees are made of air, primarily. When they are burned, they go back to air, and in their flaming heat is released the flaming heat of the Sun which was bound in to convert air into tree.

Blu-tack too. No Solder station is complete without it (IMO).

The Audio Note stuff is an interesting mix - the only significant difference to normal silver-loaded solder is that it's 6% Ag rather than the more usual 4%. The addition of a dab of antimony is mainly to improve wetting - it's not usual in reel solder but more common in solder used in flow baths.

Expensive stuff though - what do you like about it?

As more than two decades have passed, it must be time to buy some solder. Further back in this thread, there was mention of "Nick's favourite" from Rapid but I didn't see what that was. Not after anything fancy like Audio Note etc.

The solder map has changed a lot since. I remember loving use of 63/37 in the aviation industry and looking through the offerings at Rapid, came across "Warton Metals Future HF 63/37 Fast Flow 2% Flux" stuff. Is Warton Metals a decent brand? Are there any other recommendations for a eutectic solder?

Cheers,
Stephen

FWIW, I use this now

Much the same as the Rapid stuff, but they had run out when I wanted some so got that from RS and continued with it.

I've been using this stuff for years, very good results and easy to clean boards, etc. after soldering.

You can get it as a 100g reel if you don't do much soldering

Sorry, I couldn't resist!

Thanks for the suggestions. It would seem that both of you posted the same formulation. So much bad press on lead free solders but maybe the formulations have got so much better. Experience may have something to do with it. I see these formulations are eutectic as well which is pleasing. Wonder what solder will contain in 2 decades more when I run out again.
