#1 Owston 2017 - What're you bringing?

Post by chris661 »

I'm very much looking forward to Owston.

So what's everyone bringing?

I'm thinking of bringing some of my PA system. Probably as follows:
2x main speakers (Faital Pro 10FH520 ported + 18Sound ND1460 + RCF HF94 horn)
2x subs (Beyma 15P1200Nd)
Class AB on the HF, Class D mids and lows. Lots of power, but I don't have to use all of it :D

... and maybe the tiny Fostex speakers I've been tinkering with. Hopefully with bigger passive radiators by then. They might get lost in that space, though.

The class AB amp has plenty of grunt and doesn't mind low impedance loads, so if there's any speakers that need a bit of a kick up the backside, I'm happy to lend it out. The class D ones are just silly. Nobody needs 2kw/ch into 2ohm. Right..?

Sounds good Chris.
If it gets boring, we can have a karaoke, with DTB and Thomas doing King Crimson in the style of a club singer.
Steve can also do his announcements even if everyone is still talking. :D :D

I'll probably bring a vinyl system this time as follows:

BTE Designs rebuilt Goldring GL75 turntable, with Mayware Formula IV Mk III unipivot tonearm and Audio Technica AT440MLB moving magnet cartridge.

NVA Phono 1 MM phono stage

BTE designs transformer coupled, silver wired, balanced passive preamp.

My EL34 based balanced pentode monoblocks

My semi-omnidirectional "OmniMet" Folded TQWT speakers.

Good point, I'll bring the mixing desk. :D

DIET - I have some decent-quality live multi-track recordings that might be fun to play with. Maybe over lunch, or with headphones.

Well... with luck we might be able to do a complete system...

Cressy-rebuilt Goldring GL72 - can certainly do that. (Garrard can't be moved without a block and tackle).
Dieselpunk AMB A24 balanced linestage if I've got it built by then
The Beast With Two Backs OTL monos if I've got those built by then
Whest PS30RDT to go between turntable and preamp although that's kinda not DIY
The Big Mets that used to be Steve's if we can fit them into the car alongside the above.

If we can't fit the big Mets (you've heard them a few times before anyway) the new Beast OTL amps should be good for 75 watts, they'll drive almost anything I reckon, although I've heard some electrostats can cause them issues.
Deck: Garrard 301 - Audio Origami PU7 - NW Analogue DH3S
Phono: Pete Millett LR, Lundahl SUT, AMB σ22 PSU
Linestage: Bruno Putzeys Balanced Pre + Hans Polak relay mod, LCDuino control
Power amps: 300B PP 'Symmetric Reichert'
Speakers: FF225WK Big Mets

I've got some small bookshelf speakers I've been working on I could bring along, but they will be a bit lost in that room...
Audax 4" carbon mid married to a ring dome tweeter, as Andrew L would say, they've got 'jump'
Plus a slightly tweaked aikido driven PSE 5881 I've been fettling if we want something thats not DHT ;-)

Simon C

PS: As Alpair 12P's are being looked at by a couple of others on here I could put the mltl's in the car if anyone wanted a listen to 12P's again.

If you bring those, I'll bring the tiny Fostex standmounts and we can all sit on the floor for a listen.

I could bring along a flatpack Ikea bookshelf to have the full 'home from home' small speaker listening experience...

If we're doing 'tiddlers' (sniggers), I'll bring my DIY/Falcon BBC LS3/5a's if anyone wants to hear them?

I'm also hopefully bringing the modded Celestion DL8's and a pair of FE167's in an Onken enclosure no-ones heard yet as they spent their entire life in the old Cancer Research Electronics workshop belting out schweet toons 5 days a week for years until last August.

I'm not going to spoil the theme by bringing the folded horn, as it won't fit in the car.
Not sure what I can bring really. I'll have a think.
