Five weeks to go until the big (115mile) charity ride; training is coming along nicely and weight is now down in the 12stones so less to carry uphill. I'm hoping to get a 50miler in during the next few days as I step up the distance...

Some good numbers in there Ray - Max HR not too bad, Avg Speed very respectable. Decent elevation too...

115 is not that bad - you get into a groove after a while - go onto a sort of auto-pilot. You'll be fine, just upping it a bit each time and you should do a 80-miler or similar about a week before. You want to end each ride with at least another 20 in your legs.

100 - 120g of wholemeal pasta each night in the preceding week, good night's kip, breakfast of porridge & honey and you'll ace it.

Thanks Nick. That more or less coincides with my planning. After a slow start when I couldn't shake off a bug I'm now confident.

50 miler done! Another early morning start, I rode a bit within myself (reflected in the wattage and heart rate stats) to push out the miles but left a challenge until the end - still a respectable average speed though.

I got out in the heat of the afternoon for the first time in about 3 weeks.
Just the standard route to Llanbedr DC & back, inspecting the dry countryside. 1hr10mins @ 133 avg. At least we had some rain Thurs and Friday (especially Friday) .
I found it a bit hard going, wind was brisk from the West, but it wasn't as hard as today's Tour de France stage . In fact not much would be harder than today's TdF stage !

Whahey, another PB this morning before work riding my usual 'Wivey and back route'. The fitness is really coming along, that's the first time I've averaged over 200watts for more than an hour. Numbers in brackets are from the last time I rode the same route on 11/07.

"The problem for someone trying to emulate a pro is that, the faster you go, the more air resistance you are up against and the more power you need. If you want to cycle twice as fast, you actually need to pedal eight times as hard. "

....and thats exactly why I choose to NOT emulate a 'pro'. I have far more fun pootling about on Scobs looking at stuff :)

Also at no point in that article did they mention Sandwich fillings.

Pfffttttt.

I wonder if 'pros' have cheese and piccallili flavoured gels?

You're right though Dave, I wouldn't like to cycle if I didn't enjoy it, though I think I'm a bit more competitive than you and part of my enjoyment, apart from enjoying the beautiful part of the country I live in, is the satisfaction after pushing myself a bit further/faster.

Another two lumpy rides this weekend totalling 62 miles and averaging around 16mph but I'll spare you the details.

I need to put in a long ride of around 80 miles in the next week or two to see how my fitness is measuring up against the 115 mile charity ride.
