....in addition, Ridewithgps also uses different elevation references to Garmin. There's a function in RidewithGPS to 'Replace Elevation Data' which always comes in lower than the Garmin data. My GPS unit doesn't track Barometric Pressure so it relies on map data from Garmin which appears different to RwGPS data, which..... will explain why in this thrilling fly thru of the ride yesterday why it reckons I climbed 2320ft which is derived from Garmin Data but 'corrected' (correct according to who?) RwGPS data staes 1667ft.

The climb up out of Clearbrook is a good lung buster but once you get to the top it don't arf feel like you're riding on the top of The England!

I live on the edge of the Peak District, which I thought was really hilly, but on a recent trip to Devon thought the riding looked tougher than in the Peak District. 4400ft in under 40 miles is more than I'd usually climb in the Peaks on a 40 mile ride, might need to think about an electric road bike when we move there in a couple of years time!

It's a lovely ride if you ever get to try it Soulman, just Google 'Drakes Trail' for info, its easy to follow as it's signposted ll the way now.

There were loads of e-bikes doing sections of that route when I rode it last week. Very popular choice for folk that want to ride but struggle for whatever reasons, I got overtaken by one (hangs head in shame!) at very high speed being piloted by a fella in full-on Camoflague Kit and massive panniers on the outskirts of Tavistock, I entered what my partner calls my 'Jack Russell-mode' and tried keeping up with him for a few miles, no chance!

Out of interest I just pressed the 'Replace Elevation Data' button on RwGPS for that ride and the elevation is totally different.

Who/what do I believe?

In a most odd twist, whilst looking on the internet for information on NickG's referenced 'infinite fractal coastlines ' I discovered the name Benoit Mandelbrot, belonging to the Mathematician.

I heard that word before in a Gong song on the Shapeshifter album, it's in the opening line to the track Shapeshifter. I had no idea who/what a Mandelbrot is/was.

A 20 second search leads to an afternoon of inquisitiveness.

Chaos!!!!

There were Mandelbrot somethings and Julia something elses...

I've forgotten the maths but even Atari had a little programme that generated Mandelbrot whatevertheyweres.

It is, though I'm not sure exactly how RidewithGPS derives the numbers it presents. Satellite positioning systems give xyz coordinates (z being elevation relative to a vertical datum, typically msl) but I'm not sure if our bike computers record the z component or if RidewithGPS could use it - it might just approximate based on the map data from youe xy coordinates.

Talking of elevation, here's my ride from yesterday; that hill in the middle was hard going! According to my bike computer my maximum elevation was 1001ft
