Weepy waily weepy gnashing of teeth....I though Ed summed it up rather well with his last sentence.

Giggles - I might have told it worse than it was of course. It's a larff and I remember Ant said almost what his dad said about cycling a year or so back. Chip off the old block?

I'm pleased with this mornings effort as I had to contend with a 20mph headwind all the way out (the uphill bit), including riding straight into a 'blizzard' for about 20minutes on the highest section.

was at the car boot this morning and arrived in front of the bicycle trader...and gravitated to 2 fixies he had. All bikes brand new, don't seem to be knock-offs. He(the trader) came running over when he saw me hovering....'90 quid sir, genuine muddy fox, bargain, suits you sir' etc etc. Well I don't know anything about fixies but I was interested....Sandrine wandered over and even she was interested.

They had minimum spokes, high rim wheels, 700 tyres and reversible rear wheel...large frame and genuinely looked the part. I've just checked out muddy fox and seems they're about £250...

looks genuine..this is the one I was looking at, the grey version

IMO, yes it could, but (dot dot dot)... take the Phickkksee for a ride first, see if it 'fits'. £90 is a nice cheap price, any idea why the seller is sellering them?

Did he refer to them as 'fixies' or the proper term 'fixed' ?

I call it fixie cos Dave calls it fixie...the advert says fixie(see link) but I don't think the trader referred to it at all by name.

I don't see the relevance..am I missing something?

So MuddyFox don't have any stock until April but this guy has them available at around 60% discount - something doesn't add up - and remember, this is something that you're going to ride on the road with traffic!

If you have any slopes in your neck of the woods I suggest buying a geared hybrid from a reputable dealer.

I seem to have stumbled on a clique here...go on let me in on the secrets please.

is there something wrong with the word fixie? Dave will explain what?
and remember, this is something that you're going to ride on the road with traffic!
not sure what this means, but as it happens I try not to ride on the road. Can you not ride a fixed wheel on the road?

Ed, what I was alluding to is that, should this be a cheap fake, it might have safety issues; would you want to risk something breaking while you're riding it?

Yes, you can ride a fixed-wheel bike on the road, providing you have an effective front brake. They're not for everyone though, especially as your primary braking is your legs and you can't stop pedalling, so I suggest you try one beore you buy. Personally, the only place I would ride a fixed-wheel bike is on a velodrome track.

Looks like Dave's too scared to comment, as he knows he's in the wrong on this.
Where I come from, people rode 'fixed' in the winter, short for 'fixed-wheel'. Anyone using the term 'fixie' would have been subject to hoots of derision from their clubmates. My suspicion is that the term 'fixie' originated in the US and was taken up by London-based hipsters very recently when they 'discovered' the concept of the fixed sprocket.

aha I think I get it.......you seem to work to pedant rules Mark.....and it seems like you expect me to as well....

I got news bro...if the manufacturer can call it a fixie, and Dave the expert(rightly or wrongly) can call it a fixie,...well, that's good enough for me...

snigger

diet: I never complained when I heard a certain person use the term 'gotten'.....
