For mounting the smartphone onto the handlebars I use a Quad Lock shell and mount - here's the handlebar mount if you want to find out more;

but thanks anyway.

I probably made it sound more complicated than it actually is but I understand.

You could just buy a GPS bike computer...

There are quite a few that are on the RidewithGPS compatibility list and you might be able to pick up a bargain on ebay.

I had some good news today. A follow-up blood test showed that the previously high level of C Reactive Protein, which is a non-specific indicator of imflammation in the body (but will be present for a range of nasties) has reduced such that the doctor doesn't think it needs further monitoring. Coincidentally, the reducing level has corresponded with my feeling much better after suffering from a general malaise and lack of energy for several months. BP this morning was 126/73 and resting pulse 53bpm - not bad for a 60yr old.

Celebrated by heading down to the office gym for the first time in a couple of months and had a good session on the rowing machine and spin bike; my numbers are lower than they were before my ailment set in but no ill affects and a good basis to rebuild.

I'm planning a lumpy 40mile ride for the weekend, which will be a good workout and test.

So I did the lumpy 40miler that I mentioned before; cycled out to Watchet on the Bristol Channel Coast then South to Wiveliscombe and home to Taunton. Mostly rural countryside and the descent towards Watchet is along a beautiful wooded valley that borders Exmoor. No ill-affects and I could have carried on so all good.

It was a grey, murky morning and quite a stiff southerly breeze developed which made the leg from Watchet to Wiveliscombe extra hard (it's very lumpy already!). Here's Watchet harbour at about 08:30 this morning;

Here's the map and the profile;

Good effort !
Do you never have a lie-in Ray ? Or do you go to bed at 9pm ? :D

Meanwhile something very interesting is afoot -
Attempt on Gethin Butler's daunting End-to-end record ( 44hrs 4mins ) by Mike Broadwith.

Currently he's past 24 hours ( around 510 miles ) and battling with a rain band and cold conditions that are following him.

Cheers Mark.

Nah, lie-ins are for softies who live in the smoke. I like to get out early when its quiet and it means I have the rest of the day free; we've just got back from a walk on the hills this afternoon. Normally to bed around 10.

Thanks for the end to end links; if he's getting anything like the southerly wind I faced this morning he'll be getting a good tailwind.

Enjoy your own ride.

Or softies who live in the country :D
But interestingly, there's no way if I'd been out on the bike for 2 hours or more I'd have much left for anything else (active) that day - but that does highlight the limits I have (again ) .
My own ride went sort-of well. I managed the near 30mile route in 2hrs08. Best distance this year.
The pulse was 144 avg , owing to the fact I was high up the scale from the start, with no obvious reason - even putting on my shoes and rolling up the waterproof for the back pocket raised it to 136 !
I knew after a while I just felt tired, especially on the hills, but was able to manage the tiredness OK. Oddly the max pulse of 171 on one of the hills was less than I expected, not clear why that would be when I ate just before going out.
I was hoping for better , as I've been strictly gluten-free for 2 weeks and had been having good results in every other area - like sleeping better, less stress, and got rid of hay fever .... but time will tell - probably there will be some ups & downs on the energy along the way.
I think my mineral balance is a bit off because I almost got a cramp in the right calf - something that never happens to me on the bike normally.
Anyway it was a good ride, despite the showers that started just as I went out .

Phwwoooaaaarrrr, it was good. Scobs and me battled a headwind all the way down to BatFace's house. Not very hilly though thankfully.

Cor, 60 miles . That's like ... twice thirty miles isn't it ?
That headwind was the same thing as here, I reckon, I had to put up with it all the way out to the turning point, slowed me down a lot. It was a champion cruise back, though !

Not arf, that wind was draining, I only tackled it one way, the last 3rd of that ride is hard work as its rough off-road canal and river paths.

I like a ride where you cross the M25 in 2 different places.
