Mmm.. yes, but aside from the route-plotting bit ( which I like ) all of the other measures I will get are just going to rub-in the fact I'm in poor shape compared to how I used to be. It was bad enough working out the speed I was doing over my normal route, about 2 years ago, and finding out it was around 14mph, and not 15 or 16mph as I believed. I reckon my max vertical ascent rate these days is less than half what I used to do - I'll never see anything like the 1000m/hr I managed once in the Pyrenees.

I remember asking my mum where Gillygillyossenpfefferkatzanellabogen by the sea was.
Does that make me old?

It was published in 1954, and both popular recordings were made the same year. So yes you is old my lad.Cressy Snr wrote: ↑Sun Jun 03, 2018 10:10 pm I remember asking my mum where Gillygillyossenpfefferkatzanellabogen by the sea was.

Chortle !
Meanwhile - Great article I found from New Scientist - absolutely hits the nail on the head regarding my experiences of Chronic Fatigue . It was like a switch being thrown on 1989.
Also the spontaneous recovery being possible - I've had that feeling about twice in the last 5 years - just for a few hours - where I felt my energy and climbing speed was normal again. Very frustrating.

Out early this morning; you can't beat starting the day with a hard climb! The steep section put my heart rate close to my maximum (220 minus your age) so a good workout.
I can feel the improvement and I'm starting to believe 100+ miles is doable.

I'm sure you've mentioned this before Ray, probably many times, but, for the hard of thinking(moi) ..what is the computery thing you use?
There's nowhere you can be that isn't where you're meant to be

Hi Ed.
It's all done using the Ride with GPS service. The basic service is free
The screengrabs I post are from my account pages on the Ride With GPS website on my laptop. Here's a link to my home page so you can see what it looks like;
https://ridewithgps.com/users/893779
This site archives my rides and stats an you can also compare your performance against previous rides or segments of rides. Also with the right level of subscription you can plan routes, the reason for that will be explained in a moment.
On the bike I use my Samsung smartphone (I have a special shell for the phone and a mount on the handlebars - very simple but neat and secure) running the Ride with GPS app. It logs my rides as I go (obviously the phone has to have GPS) and I then upload it to the Ride with GPS website, using wifi, when I get home. The Ride with GPS app records my heart rate via a bluetooth heart rate monitor (I use a Whahoo TICKR) and that data also gets uploaded at the end of the ride.
In addition, with the right subscription, the Ride with GPS app will act as a satnav, giving turn by turn instructions based on the route I have chosen.
You can configure the Ride with GPS app for various options of data read (current speed, distance travelled, heart rate, etc, etc.) as well as a map. For short rides you can leave the smartphone screen on all the time but this obviously uses more battery so for longer rides I set it to automatically turn off and I then also use a simple GPS cycle computer for speed/distance data. BTW, even with the screen turned off the satnav function still tells you when you need to turn etc.
Does that all make sense? If not just ask...
Sorry, I couldn't resist!
