I doubt that would be illegal.
My dad used to have an operational cannon made of slate, about 6" long.

Seems pretty easy to knock yp, might have a go.

Doubt you'd even need a lathe.

That's dangerous thinking, that is...

I'm thinking a large bolt, drill down the middle, small hole at one end into the large cutout...

You could claim it's a scale replica of something. Historical interests etc etc.

I don't want to seem an "old fart" but I have to agree with Ray.

Thats quite a sweeping statement.

All depends on your appreciation of the forces involved, the scale of what your considering building, and the legality of the project.

With a decent level of understanding, the skill to turn that into something physicaly safe and more than a little common sense there is no reason why it couldnt be completely safe.

Having said that, my stepdads friend lost a hand when they were kids messing around with a blunderbus full of gunpowder in his dads shed!

Alot of the mechanical engineering and repair work ive done on various automobiles had the potential to be far more dangerous than a mini bb firing canon :)

I guess we can agree that DIY firearms are 'not recomended'
