Jeeez....
The world looks so different after learning science. For example, trees are made of air, primarily. When they are burned, they go back to air, and in their flaming heat is released the flaming heat of the Sun which was bound in to convert air into tree.

Saw this vid posted on a skate forum. I felt shakey just watching that.pre65 wrote:Blimey !

Absolutely no way would I go up a mast (as much as i admire the engineering and technology)
I get the wobbles just looking up at masts, lordy knows what I'd be like looking down from one. I don't 'do' ladders either.

FWIW. The tallest man made structure in the worldused to be the Warsaw radio mast.
Note 'used' to be.
It fell down during maintenance... <gulps>

I only watched half of the video before feeling too dizzy; the bit where the guy climbs the rungs at the top with no safety line.....
It seems I have something in common with DTB as I can't climb a ladder to any height either so the thought of doing something like this job is completely alien to me.

Yep, don't do heights either. When commissioning presses it was often needed to work at the top (about third story of a house), I had to push myself very hard to get up the scaffolding and then go from the top of the scaffolding over on top of the press (the motors and manifold were often on the top). That mast is just insane.

The first one gives me the collywobbles more - it's the thought of climbing up the outside of the final mast using those welded on rungs and no harness!Dave the bass wrote:

I used to go up GPO towers in the dim and distant past though nowhere near as high as that one, maybe a couple of hundred foot of microwave tower, on fixed ladders. I had six months at it until privatisation, when most of the aerial stuff was contracted out. Never had to climb the ironwork like that guy was doing though, as the dishes etc tended to be hung off the sides, 4 or 5 on either side of the access ladders.
If you noticed, the guy kept looking down, which is exactly what you are trained to do. You HAVE to know where your feet are at all times, which is why he kept checking. At those heights you have to know where the ground is in relation to your own body otherwise disorientation can set in even for experienced tower engineers. As you can imagine, disorientation at those heights is highly dangerous and can easily lead to a fatality.
Whilst you are moving you look up, you look down, up, down and so on. You can look to the side when stationary on your safety line, but NEVER whilst climbing.
Couldn't do it now, not fit enough and not sure I could stand it anymore at my age. I did enjoy it for the short time I did it and it stood me in good stead when our flat roofed dormer deck needed replacing at 35 feet up.
