Note that powerline adapters have to be plugged directly into a wall outlet, never into a socket strip, and certainly never into a strip with noise suppression 🙄
Yes, I had both the modem router and access point on the same SSID, but the phones were unusable as they continually changed between the two. And yes, the powerline adaptors are plugged directly in to the wall sockets.

Having done some more reading I'm not sure I'm any closer. A powerline would be a simple solution but one with AC pass through and wi fi looks like it's going to set me back over £100 to find out if it'll work okay.

I would try and avoid power line adapters if at all possible due to induced noise and variability in speed, they rarely meet the advertised rates...still if nothing else works then they maybe the only solution.

You can use old routers to extend Wi-fi coverage in the house using the same SSID but they will require a network cable run back to your main router. Make sure the routers are on different IP addresses and use the same SSID, password and encryption (WPA etc) and different channels.

The only issue with this is some mobile devices don’t switch correctly between the routers pinging back and forth between them and there is no ‘hand off’ when the device moves between routers so you get an interruption in service...it’s not seamless.

However, UniFi have some low cost solutions that support Zero-handoff that would solve the issue neatly, you would need a couple of access points, their controller or just the s/w running on your network somewhere and a PoE switch to power and connect everything together.

Edit: They now have something called fast roaming which works better according to them and lets you use different channels for each access point.
Only the Sith deal in absolutes.

Yes, that's how I had the AP set up.

Yep, that's the symptom I had. :-(

Something else to try to get my head round! So much for hoping for a simple more powerful modem router

Had a panic last night, thought phone had died. Was working, picked it up to do something, totally unresponsive. Black screen, no sounds. No amount of button clicking could get a peep out of it. Ar5e.

Put it on charger, didn't seem to do owt. Mega ar5e. Thought that's it battery's fooked.

Tried it again early this morning and it managed to display a dim battery symbol with a red line at the bottom, i.e. "HELP TOTALLY FLAT CHARGE ME (YOU PLONKER)". (Well not totally, else couldn't even do that much.)

So plugged in charger, three hours later, back up to 100% and phone working again. PHEW!!! Image

I hate it when my coffee looks at me when I’m trying to drink it.

Yikes.

Reminds me of a logo design on a carrier bag from a chippy in Anglesey years ago, that I still remember as being a bit creepy.

It was a simple cartoon type drawing of a inanely grinning fish lying across the top of a plate of chips.

What's wrong with this picture?

A. It shouldn't still be alive.

B. It shouldn't be happy about it.

Had a Lancaster flying over us really low. Would be the second time this year that I've seen it. I presume it's the same one.

There are only two, and one lives in Canada, so yours will be the BBMF one which lives at RAF Coningsby.

Actually Shane, there are more than two.

Additional to those already mntioned, there is the Panton Brothers' Lanc at East Kirkby - this does taxi runs but does not fly (although it is capable of flight), there is another in Auckland which flew in there some years ago and, presumably, with a bit of TLC, it could fly out. I believe that there is another somewhere in Australia. There could be more.

As a sort-of-related aside, I watched the BBMF and the Canadian aircraft escorted by the BBMF Spitfire and Hurricane at Dawlish Warren when the Canadians so generously allowed their a/c to come here. A section of the large crowd was sitting on a railway embankment and watching the display taking place along the shoreline. Sitting next to me was a bloke of around 35 and with a couple of his sons who were about 10/12. As the two bombers flew past together, most of the people stood up, perhaps to get a better view? I also stood and said to the lads "Stand up, boys". The father got very shirty and asked who the hell was I to tell his kids what to do? I felt it a sign of the age that it was necessary to explain to this ignorant lout that 55,000 volunteers of Bomber Command gave their lives so that he could enjoy a day in the sun as a free man with his kids and that these aircraft represented those who had made this sacrifice. Surely, such a small mark of respect might be in order?

The bastard just sat there, making me wish I was 50 years younger.

There’s plenty of them about I’m afraid, Baggy. I must say though that as the years have gone by I expected observance of the memories of those times to fade but, if anything, I’d say the reverse has happened. I never fail to be impressed when the five hundred or so fellow occupants of the call centre I work in fall totally silent on Remembrance Day, especially considering that the vast majority of them are under thirty. Thirty years ago it was all but ignored in most work places.

And so now every April, I sit on me porch, and I watch the parades pass before me
And I see my old comrades, how proudly they march, reviving old dreams of past glories

And the old men march slowly, old bones stiff and sore, the forgotten heroes of a forgotten war

And the young people ask, what are they marching for? ...and I ask myself the same question
There's nowhere you can be that isn't where you're meant to be

It was the Lanc out of Coningsby then, and matches their schedule.

My Lenovo laptop is now back in action. :D

The old lid had a broken hinge, so I got a used lid from Lithuania (Ebay) and a new LCD screen (also Ebay) which was the same make as the old one.

Total cost was under £100, but the laptop was worth saving.

In a bit of questionable journalism the BBC report on a potentially helpful bit of legislation

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-45266357

But it includes this paragraph:
In another case, the Dogs Trust said a French bulldog called Lola was forced to travel from eastern Europe so her puppies could be born and sold in the UK at a higher price. Two of her puppies later died.
The word "forced" there makes me think the writer didn't notice it was a dog they were talking about :-)
