No bike riding today with snow still on the ground so had planned to spend some good time on the13E1 project; instead I have ahead full of a cold and have largely vegetated!

Just been out on the hills in the snow. Just beautiful , light was fantastic especially at the and as I was coming down - the "sun poked impudent marmalade fingers" through the pine tree and the hills were a pale pink against a turquoise sky.

Got great birthday presents from both my kids last week. Our Ant bought me a virtually mint original CBS pressing of the first Paul Simon album and our Amy got me a fantastic book: "The Guitar Amp Handbook - understanding tube amplifiers and getting great sounds" by David Hunter.

I thought it a bit left-field when she brought it round, but she'd been looking for valve electronics books and had concluded that there wasn't anything in that particular department that would not duplicate what I already had.
Over the last week I've read the book cover to cover and enjoyed every word of it. It has provided me with a new way to think about valve amplifiers and I don't mean building amps deliberately, that break up, distort and saturate their output transformers.

The whole thing is of course, shot through with guitar amp history, 'tone' discussion and classic circuits from Fender, Marshall, Vox, Mesa et al, and Hunter talks to a number of modern amp designers in the final chapter. Ken Fischer of Trainwreck Circuits, Mark Sampson of Star Amplifiers, Mark Baier of Victoria Amp Company, Michael Zaite of Dr Z Amps, Victor Mason of Mojave Amp Works, Reinhold Bogner of Bogner, Brian Gerhard of Top Hat Amplification, Steven Fryette of Fryette Amplification and Holger Notzel of Komet.
It's these designers and their philosophies that proved the highlight of the book. Their views on resistors, KISS, signal caps and speaker/amp interaction in particular. I'll read it again before long. Xcellent stuff!

And the Paul Simon album is great.

Some while ago I sent my poo samples away for inspection by the bowel cancer department.

Imagine my surprise when I got a letter last week saying they had found a positive result.

Anyway, I had a colonoscopy this afternoon at Addenbrookes hospital and they found everything is normal. It's strange watching on a monitor whilst one's insides are being inspected.

Worst part was the forced evacuation of the bowel prior to the inspection.

I think the poo inspection result may have been due to me eating black pudding on one day, as it seems the tests (at the moment) are unable to differentiate between human and animal blood.

I'm mightily relieved that everything is normal.

Damn! I always have a high protein breakfast (typically scrambled eggs) with our youngest son every morning, and we almost always have a slice of black pudding in there too.
