I wish I could understand Japanese, 14 year old daughter is learning it (into manga in a big way) but its a bit late now

I think they are demonstrating the superior qualities of a Garrard 401?

Oh course as we all know valves play a big part in the final quality stakes.
I'm sure that's what they are saying :D

Oddly it's a 401 that's of choice though ??

Well, I'm a little savvy and clearly at one point they were saying that 301 grease bearings are the popular vogue, but actually a good 401 oil bearing is better and if you really need the best, there is no alternative to a Slatedeck bearing modification! Yer, that's it isn't it! Did I mishear or anything. Don't think so! Oh, and a bit of solid stuff like slate apparently makes a big difference. Seems good to me.

No he was saying, with a tear in his eye, I long for the day I can have a 301 and some bigger valves like Paul Barker.

At about 03.00 he says "it's bleedin' freezing outside, thats why I switch on these funny electric heaters I bought down the flea market to keep the place warm...'ang on a mo...I'm just gonna pull the curtains to keep the warmth in, I'm 62 y'know. " Then he gets out the yellow pages and flicks through some numbers and can be heard to say "Now, where can I buy me an iPlod".

Thats what I think he says.

Jokes aside, it's great to see two presenters so enthusiastic on such a minority subject.

What is this chaps name, Sukumo? Sam, I don't think that's it but it's something like that ???

Susumu Sakuma

http://www10.big.or.jp/~dh/

I think the Eimac 304 TL's in the video are very handsome .

In the article in Sound Practices in the early 90's he is asked -
"What are the important issues if you are building valve HiFi ?"

His Zen-like responses are :

(i) Recognise the importance of the many relationships with family and friends
and
(ii) Try to induce cooperation between man and machine

Nice !

Nice footage of more valves and amps in this vid, including what looks like 212s.

We're going to Japan in four weeks time. I had toyed with the idea of looking Sakuma san up, but thought it might not be much of a day out for Sue. She's just seen the first vid and suggested we go find him, bit of an adventure she thinks!

I know, I know, I must be mixing him up with someone else? I've lost the sound on my PC so must tinker a little before looking at these clips.

I think you may be thinking of Shishido-san

could be, could be!

Shishido was the chap who did that LW design that Mr Ramsey introduced to quite a few of us here.

Shishido was the designer for Wavac as far as I know .

The video was in Sakuma's cafe, so I wonder if it's still open - if so, that sounds like a perfectly normal tourist day-out !
