#1 Russian 6P3S-E as a substitute for an EL34/5881

Post by colin.hepburn »

Just a little confused over anode plate voltages max 400v but in Class A 1 350v for the 5881 http://www.r-type.org/pdfs/5881.pdf and EL34 Class A 250v http://www.r-type.org/pdfs/el34-1.pdfand the 6P3S-E is at 250v http://www.tubes.ru/techinfo/HiFiAudio/6p3s.html
I am Running the EL34 and 5881s at 405volts
And I was thinking of trying this 6P3S-E which are claimed to be equivalents to the 5881 see link
http://ussr-tubes.com/index.php?main_pa ... cts_id=312

Surfing the net it seems some are using the 6P3S-Es and 460volts in pp amps
Can anyone clear up this confusion for me thanks :?

No experience of those but data sheet says max. 250V for the 'E'. So, not totally like a 5881/6L6 then. Image

But could be in other respects.

I found this elsewhere "No, they aren't a 6L6GC substitute. Keep them under twenty watts total dissipation, and they will be fine. I've run mine at 450 VDC with no worries." (n.b. I can't yet link due to status so insert text into google to find source) which you could just as easily have found using google too but it's just one of many amateur opinions which may conflict with the truth. You decide. These days it is very hard to separate the wheat from the chaff in the information highway.

Yep I was under the impression that if they were claimed to be subtitles for the 5881 I could just swap my 5881s over to 6PS3-E as a direct replacement until I seen the anode voltage at 250 volts
My single Ended JE EL34 Amp is running Sovtek 5881s @ 405 volts anode
Cathode @ 30v/560R=53mA so this would kill the 6PS3-E wouldn't it if used as a direct replacement

I have some equipment pull 6L6's if you want to try those instead. i am not really in a position to set up a test circuit there is too much to do and too little time. But if you want to just plug in and try them they are yours.

Yep would like to try the 6L6s according to the blurb on the JE EL34 amp say it can use all the following valve as plug and play 6550, KT66, KT77, KT88, KT90, KT100, 6L6, 5881, EL34, so far I have only tried the mullard/Sovtek EL34s and Sovtek 5881 which I think I prefer

I don't think I will want to try the full list of valve but my try KT66/77 the 6PS3 -E was a contender to compare with the Sovtek 5881/6L6 but its low anode voltage worries me

The above list of plug and play valves were with the original spec which was HT 375v @ anode cathode 28v/880R=31mA I have since change this to anode 405v HT cathode @ 30v/560R=53mA So if the 6L6 is plug and play with the changes I have made to the amp then I would like to borrow them to try please :)

I run PP with 6p3s-e at 400V. I had 6p3s too but these can't take such high voltage.
