Where you have AC heated DHTs, the humbucking pot usually has something like a pair of 47R resistors connected between wiper and the ends of the pot track. Is this purely to provide some law faking around the central part of the pot track?

If I understand correctly, it's so the pot doesn't see all the load and overheat?
Either that or it's to bring it up to the correct value.

Yes, I assumed it was to reduce the current through the pot, and to provide a path if the wiper became disconnected as it turned (if you know what I mean).
Whenever an honest man discovers that he's mistaken, he will either cease to be mistaken or he will cease to be honest.

Yes, it makes sense that if the wiper isn't conducting very well then the extra resistors take over. They share the load too in the first place making the life of the pot easier.
