#1 12" drive unit experiment.

For some time I have mumbled about using my pair of Pioneer 12" drivers for a speaker project.

I have half a sheet of BBP, and I've worked out it is enough to build just one experimental cabinet.

The driver will be angled at 45 degrees to use my ceiling as a reflector and placed close to the wall to free up floor space.

Dimensions will be 16" wide X 24" tall and 11.5" deep. I've no parameters for the drivers so it's pure guesswork.

It's a bit wet outside at the moment so I can't say when cutting (and bleeding etc) will commence.

I dashed outside during a dry spell and managed to cut a strip 16" wide by 48" long. This should do the top, bottom and front panels.

Have you built it yet?

NO.

All the panels are cut, but I need to rout the edges. I've set the router up but ran out of time today.

Other things like walking, mowing the grass and pruning the apple tree took precedence I'm afraid to say.

I haven't even got the plywood for my 12-inchers yet.

I started today by routing the back panel bottom edge.

Unfortunately the cutter crept out and I ended up cutting 9.5mm off. My fault for not tightening the cutter collet securing nut properly.

I've cleaned up the edge, and will adjust the base to compensate. Good job I had not cut the base panel to it's proper size. :)

The side routs on the back panel went to plan so all the other routs can be done now.

Most of the routing done now.

Next up is to cut the base panel to fit the aperture, and similarly fit the sloping top panel (baffle) taking care to get the angles right top and bottom.

It's supposed to be wet here tomorrow so that might hinder progress.

There was a dry spell a while ago, so I loosely assembled the sides and measured up the base aperture.

Halfway through cutting the base to size I realised it was marked "baffle" --- shock horror.

Fortunately the proper base was just big enough to use as the baffle ---- phew !

The 45 degree angle on the baffle top edge was cut with the jigsaw, which has a movable base. A bit of a faff to do but got there in the end.

Can't find my "no nails" adhesive at the moment, but I can now cut the hole for the 12" driver. :)

PS Can't find my compasses now to mark out the hole. :(

This sort of stuff is so familiar :D there are some days when stuff just goes wrong and you can't do anything about it - and tools hide from you - I end up stomping around the house swearing. Usually this is when you've got a limited slot of time to work with too.

Oh so true Mark.

Anyway, I used a 12" plastic rule in the end, drilled two holes at the required distance, small screw one end and swivel round.

Now jigsawed the hole and all ready to glue together. I'm playing bowls tomorrow in Sudbury so I'll get some adhesive from Homebase. I find "no nails" quite good but Ill see what they have.

So, back in to relaxation mode. :D

Here is what it looks like, still some fettling to do before glueing.

Seems the baffle was cut a tad short, by about 5mm. :(

While I was in Bury st Edmunds yesterday I popped into homebase, and they had a 6mm thick strip of the right width so I purchased a short length.

Trying it for size in situ looks ace, just needs the baffle sanding a tad at the angled end.

Finally got round to fettling the baffle, and it's now glued in place.

Must wait a few hours while it dries.

One of my 12" drivers is showing small splits on the surround. I got another one off Ebay but it's showing the same signs, but not as bad.

I wonder what other 12" drivers may do ?
