Before Owston, as it's quite near now may I remind everyone of these two 3rd octave response graphs.

Response 1:
taken on axis,

Whiskery singeing, teeth rattler a-go-go :director:

Response 2:
30 degrees off axis

Niiiiiice.

Just so you know where to sit and where not to.

Dem tingies is a bit special, not perfect but brilliant value, and do all the important things. Good with the NVA clone, well very good, but jaw dropping good with that OTL.

Yes, I liked them a lot as well.

I found the NVA amp seemed to have more "clarity", but overall I preferred the music with Steves PCL86 spud amp.

Yep, very nice, agree with all that's been said, and a few degrees off axis is all it takes.

Lots of information dropped with the spud amp, spacial especially, but sounded very nice. Information and clarity and space and valve so called character for the addicted or brainwashed then build an overpowered OTL and make sure it doesn't burn the house down

I've nearly burnt the house down twice with OTLs. But they don't half sound good.

There's not much they haven't got for the vintage restorer.

They're only posting out twice a week now, as Sid is now 83 so they've allowed him to go part-time.

That's what I like about Owston; the opportunity to learn a bit about your setup.
These full-rangers performed better than I could have imagined, and as long as you sat off axis to them, they produced a nicely coherent sound, with a fairly even response.

At home with them this evening, I got to thinking. I had spoken, at Steve's, with Scott about toeing speakers outwards rather than inwards as is usual with hi-fi units, but after that thought about it no further. These being pro drivers, I started wondering again this evening about arranging them in a so-called "splayed array"

It was easy to turn the cabs, so that they were pointing outwards by about 5 degrees.
Frankly, I'm thrilled with the results. :)
Centre voice images are rock solid and believable and stereo positioning is great, with musical cues clearer than with the speakers firing straight ahead or toed in.

I was afraid of a "hole in the middle" from using the splayed array, but if anything, the central image has firmed up rather than diminished.

I'm happy with the results of the experiment. It looks odd but it works beautifully with the Fane drivers and I'm sure I'll get used to the visual.

Been listening to classical all morning with the splayed array format and the ambient cues to the recording venue are rather better than the straight ahead or toed in convention.
I'm getting not only plenty of semi-omni soundstage action, but also excellent stereo placement, depth and a nice, wide sweet spot.
These are the best speakers I've had for reproducing classical music.

I'm getting Ant to produce a set of circular grilles to cover the drivers. There is enough of the Fender tweed grille cloth left to produce a nice looking pair. Pics will follow once the grilles have been made and fitted.

It's a fine pair of Hoovermatics. I love 'em. 8)
The Fender tweed grilles take that very slight edge off the top end, without losing detail. They are about as sweet now as the 15s our Ant has.

Important finishing touches to the grilles are the brass mirror screws:
