Possible full range speaker project
#1 Possible full range speaker project
Hi all, my first post on here. I quite enjoy building my own speakers, at the min I have a three way design, seas excel/atc/scanspeak.
I'd like to try a simpler design and considering a full range, possibly the alpair. At the min I have a 24' x 16' and the system sits in one side of it, listening distance 3m. Can anyone pass on there experiences of their character and limitations? Obviously with my current speakers you get a lot of everything, but looking for a nice simple easy sound. I listen to pretty much every genre of music..

Have a read through this thread -
http://www.audio-talk.co.uk/phpBB3/view ... lit=quasar
A very simple build - but I have just borrowed a pair of these drivers and had a 30L sealed box on-hand to test one of the drivers. It has very much exceeded my expectations, on quite a lot of material I'm hearing more than on most speakers I've built or heard !
The FX120 is probably the best one Fostex make, I've heard or owned many of the other good ones, this one beats them ( for limited output, granted ) .

I had the pencil in mind, with the 12p. I prefer the conventional shape. Is there any benefits sound wise to the frugel design?

I think most so called "full range drivers" are actually wide band drivers, and can benefit from bass and treble reinforcement.
I use the 12P on a baffle, with an 18" bass driver and a tweeter.
The Frugalhorn 3 is very good, but not exceptional, I know cos I have a pair.
Where are you located Crecky ?

I'd probably go for the Alpair 12P in either the standmount bass-reflex that Scott worked up, or a Pencil. I've heard the former but not the latter. The Alpair drivers are a good introduction to full-range speakers - they're pretty neutral (not all full-range units are) and offer decent extension at both ends.

I got a reply by PM.
If you were nearer to me you could have a listen to my Frugalhorn 3's, and my baffles with the 12s.
There are members nearer to you who might respond if you made your location public.

Metronomes are an option, i like mine

Being in the living room, the metronomes wouldn't go down well!

If there is anyone in my area, I wouldn't mind popping round to have a listen, or bring over to mine.

Go on... don't be shy... where are you?
Philosophers have only interpreted the world - the point, however, is to change it. No it isn't ... maybe we should leave it alone for a while.

I don't understand ?
Jean is my partner, she has a mum (don't we all ?) who lives on the outskirts of Bradford.
Just saying.
