Neat!
Philosophers have only interpreted the world - the point, however, is to change it. No it isn't ... maybe we should leave it alone for a while.

OK
Have got the sheet materials all ready for starting on the project.
So if you are all ready we'll get The Flatback Banned underway
so let's do the bus stop to get in the mood.

Ordered the veneer earlier this evening. This time we are using European oak.
I'm not buying a third set of drivers until I'm sure these will work as well as the fully tapered cabinets, so the test mules Simon had will be donating their drivers to the flatback cause.
Crossover cap will be the cheapie but I'll need a pair of air core inductors for the 2nd order tweeter crossover. No veneer will be applied and no expensive caps purchased until I'm convinced the flatbacks are as good as the full tapers.

Go back to the basic crossover first, this new config may mean you don't need the new bits.

Got a bit of timber cut between the showers this afternoon and have the four sides of both cabs cut out and edges trimmed square with the trusty 1960s, Stanley No5 jack plane.
Tried the cabinet sides, which are a right angle on the back edge, next to the existing speakers to check the visuals, and....not bad at all.
Because in effect, the back face of the speaker cab is brought forward 3" at the bottom edge, to make it 90 deg, then the front face has to be kicked out at the bottom edge by the same distance, in order to maintain the same cabinet volume and internal expansion rate.
This increase in rake at the front looks very, very nice in terms of the visual effect the cabs produce. I'm quite pleased with the look. WAF is maintained and in all probability will be increased by this alteration to the cabinet aesthetic. Hopefully then, science and art will work together in this new version, to produce a musical quality, that is at least as good as the fully tapered versions.
Fingers crossed.

That's okay, I'll be there with my Mercury "Balalaika Favourites" LP. Speakers Corner reissue - it's quality, you know. Cost me a pretty penny did that.Cressy Snr wrote: ↑Wed Apr 26, 2017 7:21 am Cheers Dave,
I'm hoping to have both flat and tapered versions going at Owston in June, playing Herb Alpert, Matt Monro, Swing Out Sister, and Petula Clark.
Then they'll be "going" alright; straight out the window, along with my arse!

What we need is a music shootout rather than the usual equipment bake-offs.
"The Easy Listening Crew" vs "The Specialists"
One ultra specialist vs one ultra easy at high volume Saturday evening, scored by either how many leave the room or who can duck the most flying beer glasses.

Yep, but you are assuming that "The Specialists" all fit into one category, I am sure there could be equal fights, and possibly a series of knockout rounds before we find the "Specialists" champion.

Last Specialist standing takes on the challenge then.
Steve, you'll be proud of me; I bought a couple of 99p CDs in a charity shop yesterday - Frank Sinatra and Barbara Streisand!

Way to go Ray! "Stoney End" is my fave Barbra Streisand by a long chalk. Not that keen on her broadway type stuff, or the late 70s "evergreen" type schmaltz.
Was in Llandudno yesterday on our annual May day bank holiday yomp up the great Orme. Much yomping later and after taking in a stunning view of the town from the eastern edge of the Orme, we got back down into the middle of the Victorian Extravaganza, with steam organs, traction engines, steam powered fairground rides etc.
A jolly good time we had.
Spent far more on vinyl than I should have done. Bought The Beatles "Help" and Otis Redding "Otis Blue" from HMV on 180g.
Was very tempted by DSOTM but resisted before my wallet really cried uncle.

I was on a charter train to Holyhead yesterday (Saturday), and as we crossed the river Conwyn and got just past the castle I looked across to the Orme and saw you yomping.
