It may be the largest collection of FX120's anywhere in the world at the moment ! - certainly more than any dealer, or Fostex International - it would seem :D

Well, I am teasing you with six, of course - two of these are loaned from my friend at work.

It's not much to do with the 6mm, for starters !
Well the FX120 is not so much a horn driver an it has a bit more damping in the cone and a different texture.
It's got a Qts of 0.45 and is less efficient ( 89db/w ) and suited to sealed box.
Sonics, it's maybe the only successful full-range driver Fostex make ( in my opinion and James's )that is, if you want to sit anywhere near on-axis. All of the others , like the 126e , have some sort of spike in the 2kHz to 8kHz area. I think the 126e's have one around 5kHz ?
They can sound good by 10 or 20 degrees off-axis but are a bit too much on-axis.
The FX120 appears to be spike-free and a very level ( not up-tilted & bright ) response over 150 to 14kHz .
Tonal colour on vocals is excellent.
Suspension is quite free and cone still light, so plenty of low signal level response.

FWIW, the FE126E (with P10 treatments including phase plug) I have here has a 6dB high narrow spike around 6.6kHz, and an overall tilted-up response. At 13kHz where they top out, they're 12dB above the 200-500Hz range.

It took a lot of EQ to get them flat, but when you do, you can take them to Owston and they'll show how bad the rest of the signal chain is!
With some EQ to counteract the LF rolloff, I was applying something of the order of 20dB end-to-end to get them flat. That was in a small passive-radiator box, though. YMMV.

Just wondering if I can take some of the pain out of buying another one or two front baffles from Perspex - with the two smaller holes cut instead of one 8" hole
One of the Perspex fronts is still in good condition, ideal for someone who has a Supravox 285 on OB and an 8" driver above . Very reasonably-priced.

Just found, looks interesting. Something to brighten up a Monday, reading this -

Nice to see a shot of Karel Shees' system as a whole, had seen a side view of the horns before.

No it's just one, Paul. I've already bodged one to put the pair of FX120's on there, on a ply board. I was looking at the other one, which is still quite smart, and wondering what to do. I have decided now to bodge the 'nice' one with a sub-board for the 120's too, but get some upper panels ordered ( 20mm Perspex ) with a slot for the ribbon tweeter, to replace the wooden boards I've been using - the overall look should be reasonably smart.

However I'm already thinking of buying a sheet of 18mm birch and getting started on a Dallas II build - at least from April. Going to get the main parts cutting done by a pro though, to cut out some of the donkey work.

Finally found a few mins either side of visiting mum, Saturday and Sunday to do something. Hardly amazing, just a sub-baffle for the second OB to hold the pair of FX120's. Just nice to actually do something for myself for once in a while and feel like I'm making progress again. I also have almost agreed details with supplier on two upper Perspex panels for the OB's, might need to get the 15 deg slant on the lower edge ( to mate with the front panels ) done my a machinist up here.
