I built this for a friend
just finished it apart from a little bit of tweakery.
it was a gl69, its not really now, just the dna is left as is usual for my attempts at improvement

It has an acos lustre gst1 on it at the moment, although i'll be keeping the acos if he has found a different arm before its collected. if not, the acos will stand in until a suitable arm is located.

a slightly different character to the 75, i think a little more musical in some ways, steel platter means mm carts, no biggie, im of a glen croft sort of mind when it comes to mc carts,a love hate relationship. and nigel who it is for uses mm carts too. but not this bloody awful at 3600 in the photos. its nasty, but suffices for testing it.

Well.
Im decidedly not happy.
Someone or something in this house has buggered the acos arm.
The deck has been sat on the table waiting for me to do one last little bit to the arm board, and the arm has suffered some sort of impact.
Looked at it this afternoon and noticed something odd about the wand alignment, so I took it off to investigate.
Turns out that the right hand bearing race on the arm wand contained 4 balls, and a load of shards of metal. The left hand one contained 5 balls and no shards.
The left hand bearing is fine, no scoring or damage, the right hand race is fine, but useless without the destroyed ball.
I dropped Johnny at audio origami an email but he doesn't have a replacement bearing. Dunno where else to try, any leads will be gratefully pursued.
Other option is to see if i can find a source for the balls and rebuild the bearing
Of course, nobody has a clue what has happened to it.
For effs sake

Measured the ball bearings I have left after the bearing fell to bits and they are both exactly 1.53mm, or 0.060" (using digital calipers) wonder if they are an imperial measurement or the 0.03mm is a manufacturer tolerance......

I'd say imperial.
The metric equivalent is 1.524mm

Usable again now

#9 Re: one off gl69
Managed to order some replacement hardened ball bearings for it, these ones apparently end up hardened all the way through. The smashed one can't have been given the amount of small pieces it ended up as.....
Hopefully these will allow the bearing to be rebuilt and mean the arm isnt scrap.
If this ends up as a successful bodge, i might put a cardas din socket in the end of the arm post as I had to take the wiring off the main cable to get the wand out.
We shall see
Maybe Mr nobody who broke it in the first place will leave it alone this time.......

Fixed it.
What a pig of a job. I realise why I don't like doing work on arms.....
Reattached the original arm cable that I had to splice back together, that was a complete sod too.
Continuity checks out, can't find any shorts, i'll have to connect it up to do a proper test though
Here's hoping....
