I picked up one of the CBS half speed remasters a while ago(Boston's eponymous album), and the cut is unbelievably good.
The EQ, sadly, is wrong - there's no air and space coming across on the pressing.
My standard pressing kicks it into the weeds.

Another data point: we finally cleaned the Jeff Beck and did a side by side comparison, swapping back and forth between the LP and the CD.

It doesn't sound BAD per se, but it's distinctly lacking in the low end and lacks the punch I'm used to from this recording. Definitely a disappointment, and we'll be selling this one and picking up a better pressing. Damned shame, but it is *definitely* an EQ issue. It's just Not Right. I'm sure you all know what I mean. Oh well...

On the up side, Wednesday we grabbed a vinyl copy of James McMurtry Live in Europe and had him sign it for us. Or rather, David had him sign it for us, and I just asked to shake his hand and drunkenly babbled something about how he's one of the greatest songwriters of our time and thanks for the music and Americana is more important now than ever before, and finished with "RESIST!" He just sat there looking bemused.

To be fair, I've been similarly pathetic EVERY SINGLE TIME I've asked an artist to sign something for me, even though I was a professional musician myself for many years and ought to know better. I blame it on the free beer. The opening band was a couple of very good session guys from Chicago and the guy who owns the Lagunitas brewery, so there was free, COLD, and really quite nice American beer on tap all night, and it was hot and sweaty in that back room. Even Nigel the roadie agreed. So that's something.

And in slightly non-vinyl news, yesterday my DARLING husband drove to Leicester and back in the sleet for me to pick up a job lot of 150 random shellac 78s for £15. I've already found two Bing Crosbys to add to my accidental collection (I don't look for them, they just come to me), an Andrews Sisters, and a Frankie Laine. Also some with especially interesting labels or sleeves (including one sleeve with a Garrard ad on it, Dave's going to love it) and some interesting stamps and custom sleeves advertising the record shops they came from. Almost all in playable condition so far, though I haven't even finished the first 50 yet.

I've been taking photos of anything I think is especially interesting. I'll share them if anyone's interested!

Wouldn't mind seeing some of these pictures Meredith. I love those old sleeves from 78s.
Mt Dad's old 78s used to have adverts for Fox's Organ shop in Doncaster, Barker and Wigfall Electrical, also in Doncaster, and The Sound of Music in Rotherham among lots of other stuff I can't recall now. Nice memories.
Have you got an eq box for 78s, that provides the CCIR, Decca FFS and other eqs that were around before everyone standardized on RIAA?
One of the guys on here, Alec, who's handle escapes me completely, brought some old R&B 78s to a meet, around 10 years ago and the diffrence in these records when played back with the right eq was not subtle. It's a whole new can of worms, but the sound of these old relics can be stunning when played back properly.

The Victrola should be OK, and a fun listen.
It's only if you want to play them on the Garrard or the Lenco GL72 with a specialist 78 stylus, through the main system that the eq becomes important.
Alec had a Hagerman Cornet MM phono stage/line amp with variable eq, a Garrard 401/SME series II detachable headshell arm, with a Shure of some kind with 78 stylus, into a pair of Beam Echo tube monoblocks and AE floorstanders, IIRC.

They love the room and the room loves them. Perfect synergy. I could hear how much better they sounded from the other end of the flat.

When we have the Lenco going we'll look into EQ. For now i'm looking at spending a few weeks getying to know the Loricraft better than I ever wanted to. 78s are always filthy and these are no exception.

As requested by Cressy Sr., here's an album of some of the most interesting stuff I found in that lot of 150 78s. I've put a brief description on each one -- if it doesn't pop up at the bottom, hit the little 'i' button in the upper right corner.

I've gone through them all now. I sorted them into "must hear now" and "will listen later" to start with. This morning I fired up the Victrola only to find that the speed has gone wonky -- it gets slower, then faster, then slower, and sometimes grinds to a halt. I'm guessing the governor needs adjustment. I sure hope it's the governor, because I do NOT want to have to deal with that mainspring!

Love those sleeves, labels and adverts.

I already have several Stan Kenton discs so I was very happy to see it in the mix. 'Knock Me a Kiss' is one of my favorites to play, though the very best one I've got is Louis Jordan and his Tympany Five, 'Choo Choo Ch-Boogie' on side A and 'That Chick's Too Young to Fry' on side B. In lovely shape, too! I got it free from a seller in Sacramento CA; I spent about an hour in his room of 78s, came out with 9, and he liked my taste so much that he said, "Is there anything back there you really wanted but it was too expensive? Go get it and it's yours." That was the one I picked, and it's still the best 78 I've got!

Just bought the first one which is abbey Road for £9.99

Normal price will be 14.99 and the double and triple albums 24.99 according to the blurb

Not bad money, and the quality seems good. This copy isnt warped for a start. Havent played it yet though
