Ali...have a look at PlugPlayer for iPad on the app store. At £2.99 it looks decent value. It streams, music, photos and whatever, from upnp servers to your iPad, so it says.

Might be worth a punt.

Cheers Steve, I'll have a look. I've got a couple that say they stream, but they have todownload the track before it'll play.

Ali, I used to use plugplayer to stream from my home server (was running Asset upnp) to my iphone before I got rid of it; worked fine as I recall.

I am a contented user of jriver MC on a windows 7 platform nowadays (streams to my Galaxy S2 and Galaxy tab just fine too via the jriver gizmo app). jriver is now available for Apple platforms and might be of interest to some. There's some good info here:

Thanks Ray. Yes, I'm also a JRiver user now, on my NVA TFS media streamer box of tricks. Best sounding of the media players IMHO.
