I think we all know by now what this section is for.

#1 A power supply for the Squeezebox

Post by andrew Ivimey »

The supplied wallwart supplies 5vots at 0.6amp. (we hooked up an avo meter and checked this).

The Squeezebox went digital out to the RAKKDAK (with transformer balanced output).

So, Andy put together two PSUs - very simple. They both took voltage from a 12volt lead acid battery.

1. was 7812 and 7805 on heatsinks, three small value Oscons, a wing and a prayer - you can imagine the circuit. After half an hour the 5volt heatsink was hot.
2. used 5amp voltage regulators; 9volt and 5volt with trim pots and three small value tantalums, coupla resistors. After about half an hour the heatsinks were barely hinting at warmth.

They both worked but did one sound better than the other. I rather thought the 5amp regulator circuit was perhaps a tad better. Andy rather thought the 78 circuit sounded better even if these voltage regulators are pretty yukky.

Ah... I thought you'd never ask! chuckles ...

well if you'd like to imagine deep black, ink blank cloudless sky of midnight and the harshest blinding yellow white heat of scalding daylight with no lids to cover your eyes then I'd be approaching the obvious difference between the wall wart and what we tried.

on the whole I'd chuck the wall wart away.

Yes, I found the same using a linear power supply I liberated from work. Makes a very worthwhile improvement I thought.

just been reading over on PFM a guy who says that music sounds better using a memory stick in the usb port than streaming over ethernet. and another who is claiming that his router/switch sounds different....

Squeezebox PSU's. I've happened across a 5V @ 3A Linear PSU that has the facility to do remote HT sensing and thus 'ride' the changing current demands very accurately (I think) and supply a rock solid 5V at the point of connection to the Touch (the DC plug in this case).

I'll try it and report back if anyones interested.
