The naim type power amp kits are more expensive and don't include heatsink, power supply and preamp (but still only a little over £20)

It would be possible to go the whole hog and build a naim pre amp clone as well should the idea possess you.....

Or you could try an integrated valve pre, chip power amp kit for £25 !

Or you could keep an eye on your local Freecycle web site.
I've had a few hi-fi freebies from my area.

I have some old solid state stuff I could dust off, but where's the fun in that?
There's so many cheap things to have a go at, it's amazing really. Now how good they are in reality is another matter, but for a bit of fun it's a lot cheaper than buying a transformer set...
I think I might start with one of Dave's £5.69 delivered specials and compare with Al's T amp. It should be an interesting reality check.

What sort of current draw do they have Dave? Looking at the ebay specs I'd guess maybe 1.5A??? I think I might have an 18V trafo at home somewhere (though it might be 15V) but I'm sure it's only 6VA so maybe a bit marginal.
There looks to be plenty of laptop charger options on ebay - found one last night for about the same price as the amp kit.

I can measure at the weekend (when Bat-Face (my Step-daughter) vacates my project room, she's lodging with us at the mo!) if you like but I'm sure its no bigger 2A on music although the laptop PSU's I've used can source about 3 to 4A or so.
TBH, I suspect you/me would never use them loud enough to pull max current anyway.

I'm sure you're right Dave. I'm in two minds to either get a wallwart of unknown provenance, or use a trafo and put it all in one box and use the rectification and filtration on the board. I don't know what a good PS for SS looks like but I'm guessing it's not what this board has! But then I don't know what an SMPS does either for that matter. Finding out is part of the fun.
"Bat face" by the way requires a photo!

I can't find any pictures of Bat's faces so you'll have to make do with a picture of Rachel instead....
I'll have a rummage around and see if I can find you a suitable SMPS. I didn't build these for 'HiFi' BTW, I just wanted summat to make a racket in the Shed/Garage/Garden.

She's a looker alright Dave. If you do find one that would be great but no stress.
I'm going to put an order in to Rapid for a few bits but can't find the female socket for the laptop type charger - can anyone point me in the right direction, or perhaps Rapid don't carry them?
