Mask is essential.

Water cools things down and cuts the dust down too.

I've used drill bits a'plenty and a jigsaw - as stone goes slate is soft and maleable.

The finished product for amateurs takes finer and finer emery/sand papers and elbow grease.

I actually went into a stone mason's with groovy and detailed funereal headstones and asked about cutting etc etc and a plinth couldn't be done for under £100 or so , so I started off on my own.

Metamorphic dear boy, metamorphic. It's the heat and the pressure that makes the slate (and marble). Fossils are just age...and age ...and age and millenia upon age.

I expect that was several years ago when replinthing in slate was all the rage. Likewise, a while back, I approached a pukka kitchen work top company which supplied finished slate worktops also with a groovy design for a twin 30mm Slate plinth and they quoted me something around £1300 :pottytrain2: Actually the monumental stone mason will be the cheapest option, albeit you might have to do the polishing yourself. A complete DIY approach really is a potentially dangerous (health) and skill challenging task, although, our Ant probably has the ability judging by his other stuff.

When I built Fakedeck I used an angle-grinder with a diamond wheel that came from The Range, a diamond dust covered blade that a neighbour gave me in a Black and Decker jigsaw and I drilled holes with woodworking spade bits. They don't last long, but they don't cost much either. You're right about the dust though, it's evil stuff and produced in prodigious quantities. A good face mask is essential. Slate Deck Darren (remember him?) used to get quite worked up about slate dust, and not without good reason!
The world looks so different after learning science. For example, trees are made of air, primarily. When they are burned, they go back to air, and in their flaming heat is released the flaming heat of the Sun which was bound in to convert air into tree.

Water jet cutting is possibly the most cost effective solution. It's amazing how accurate they can be, even with small holes.

My local supplier prefers the cutting data on disc to get the best quote.

I doubt that the prices have changed much if at all at the stonemason's - they don't care whether its a headpiece or---

but an angle grinder... I forgot. Like a knife through butter! Fab

But there's still a lot of finishing to be done and that requires patience.

I did put a lenco 75 in a slate plinth before, just found the thread.
Was quite a while ago, nearly eight years

Still have the second piece of slate. And a much better set of tools. And a much tidier style of builds......

If you want a loan of £300 to buy it and sell it on, just PM me.
He says something about 're-finished in black' , not sure if that is a problem.

Even a ropey 401 goes for £400.

Even a ropey 401 goes for £400. I would take Mark up on his offer, you could develop that to sell on for £600 upwards just with a plinth of the quality you did your Dad. The seller is keeping it until the last though. At least it's local.

I didnt mean for me :D
A 401 would be a build i would like to do as a working advert for bte designs as there is a reasonable market for 401 maintainance and plinth building but as paul says a ropey 401 will fetch good money. And there are quite a few companies out there providing such services.
Ive the 99 and the 160 to be going at at the moment,
But if someone was in the market for one that is a really good price.
Thats an extremely generous offer mark, but i couldnt bring myself borrow that kind of money from anyone :D
Cheers ant
