Just to break with tradition, I'm going to annouce the death of a famous musician on this section rather than the 'News' area.
One of the finest UK musicians ever.
One of the finest Jazz pianists in history, close behind Art Tatum, Thelonius Monk and Oscar Peterson ...
A wonderful, modest, understated man, with a dry sense of humour and a twinkle in his eye.
May he rest in peace and his light shine on through his records
- off now to play " Starless and bible black" from 'Jazz suite Under Milk Wood'.

One of my choices for the finest pieces of music ever recorded -
There's a 'magic moment' around 2:50 which illustrates why I think he's such an outstanding musician . Bobby Wellins on sax is fabulous too .

Agreed Mark.
have you listened to Bobby Wellins' solo effort from a few years ago called
"Time Gentlemen Please" ? An excellent record; highly recommended.

I haven't heard that record Steve - thanks for the tip. Will have a look later when I'm getting a couple more Christmas presents.

Around 2003, after we left the pub, I stayed in touch with the folk who had started the Jazz night, as it looked like they might not continue, so we started a thing called Enigma Music to continue. It was mainly Pete and Geoff who did all the work. One of the things that we put on was Stan Tracy at a local Georgian Chapel that was being restored at the time.IslandPink wrote:Respect !
