I have always enjoyed that record ever since I heard a couple of tracks on Peel's programme c.1979/80.
I can't remember when I first bought a copy.
When I had early things like the WAD SE amp and conventional speakers, it was always possible to enjoy about 2/3rds of the tracks. Only recently have I understood what incredible musicianship went into 'The sheriff of Hong Kong' and 'Making love to a Vampire with a monkey on my knee'. This because of the shunt-reg power supply on the main amp and the OB speakers with low group-delay.

What makes this any different?

There's about 300 LP's in my stash that could play quite happily on a normal SE amp and ported speakers with lagging bass. Most of the singer-songwriter stuff, some folk and some classical can be played and enjoyed without the timing being spot-on. It will still improve if you improve the amps/speakers, but it's not critical. As a shocking example, a few years ago, before I started building regulated supplies for the main map, my copy of 'Unorthodox behaviour' by Brand X was in the 'out' pile of LPs to sell.

I'm reading what you're saying Mark, and I'm not disputing any of it....It's just that I don't personally agree with it...simply based on the fact that when this album and lots of it's contemporaries were recorded it wasn't the 'one take' scenario from the 1950s. These guys tracked their albums, which implies they laid down tracks and then played over what they'd recorded to add more tracks.

Well in considering this method it means they(the musos) had to listen to previously laid tracks on replay equipment, equipment which most people I know agree isn't or wasn't as clean, accurate, fast etc as much of the equipment that superceded it.

How any band of humans could perform 'The sheriff of Hong Kong' is beyond me, that one hit me this time more than ever before

Still kicking myself for not buying a Pink-label copy when they were £40 !

The Panegyric Records pressings are very good.
The download might still be valid too - an MP3 transcription of Robert Fripp's personal copy of the album.

Oh I'm fine for playing copies Chris - I have two early-70's pink-rim copies , just sold a third (later) one to a guy at work.
It's just that the Pink 'i' label first ones were £40, but now they're £600 !
Can't complain with all the other stuff I bought around the same time.

There's a Mobile Fidelity one from 1982 that I keep thinking about buying... but still not sure ... not cheap.

I had this on vinyl when it first come out, then let it go.

I'm currently listening to some ambient dross by State Azure that I got off Bandcamp. Called Modular Works III. Can't leave it alone been playing it all week pretty much.

Three and a half hours!

And that's only the tracks I like...
