This morning I had decided to stay out of the man lab and listen to some music instead
Somehow I got myself into a prog session.
I started with "Moondawn",by Klaus Schulze, followed by Camel's "Moonmadness" followed then by Dave Greenslade's woefully underrated (IMHO) mid 70s guitarless prog project in the form of "Bedside Manners Are Extra"
Now got a bit of Pat Metheny on.
I think I need a shot of rhythm and blues next
Gotta dance after that lot.
Great stuff nevertheless.

Yes,
I never got on with Selling England... Far too clever for its own good.
In fact, Yes and Genesis drove me up the wall. I just didn't get either band.
Now, Wishbone Ash, Camel, Caravan, Faust, Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze, Greenslade, The Moody Blues, Robin Trower, ELO, Cyril Verdeax, Gong, and early Jean Michel Jarre, I did get.
I only heard the odd smattering of Beefheart and Zappa during the early to mid 70s, so I could do with an education on those guys, like some suggestions as to where to start. I mean Trout Mask Replica although I can appreciate the comsumate skill it took to keep all those rhythms going without losing it is probably not representative of the Captain's usual output and is frankly hard work.

Yeah, I'm sure it's put more people off his music than attracted to but it is a mega-work IMHO. Well, he went through a lot of different 'phases' so its difficult to just pick one out and say 'thats Beefheart' but I reckon 'Clear Spot' http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clear_Spot is a good place for his mid period stuff and has a lorra Soul to it so I think that'd tick yer box Steve. Knowing you like R+B a lot its worth looking at his/their debut too -> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Safe_as_Milk which is R+B with a CB twist.SteveTheShadow wrote: I mean Trout Mask Replica although I can appreciate the comsumate skill it took to keep all those rhythms going without losing it is probably not representative of the Captain's usual output and is frankly hard work.
FloppyBootStomp did me an ace guide on cassette years (and I do mean years and years) ago that got me started on CB, it had a lot of this album on it too which personally really pulled me into CB + TMB http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shiny_Beas ... _Puller%29
All just IMHO.

Thanks for recommending Clear Spot Dave.
I love it!
A particular fave is Too Much Time. They've got that early 70s R&B vibe down pat and I can see why Working Week covered it on their album Companeros in the 80s.
