I did listen to it Steve, then had to go out . It was pretty nice to my ears but didn't grab me as amazing... but that's OK , this is your field, you get to be as enthusiastic as you like !

I was an avid reader of Blues & Soul and Black Echoes way back in the day and around 1977 Clinton was getting seriously pissed off with "spectacle" performances by groups such as Earth Wind and Fire who were at the time of their "All n All" album performing levitation tricks in their stage show. I saw EW&T on that tour and they were completely OTT with the stage sets that looked like Egyptian Temples, and Maurice White playing guitar whilst lying horizontally in mid-air. Wonderfully daft and I loved them.

"Dirt Poot and Fire" as Clinton called them were a symptom of funk "selling out" as he put it in the interview in Blues & Soul. He was on about using the polar opposites of Parliament and Funkadelic to make some sort of political statement, by having one group playing stripped back stuff and the other taking the complete piss by "out pooting" EW&T and the other OTT groups who in his opinion were selling out to the shallowness of disco and there were pics of them in fatigues on stage doing Funkadelic material as a punk like reaction to the all excess.

It failed to work as he'd hoped, so he went for the piss taking rather than the po-faced, and daft costumes won out. The line between Parliament and Funkadelic ended up academic. I don't doubt the consumate musicianship, but IMO It all became seriously and increasingly daft, and for me just plain bizarre, disturbing and too far out. YMMV of course if you like that sort of thing.

There's a parallell with Gene Simmons deciding that Kiss needed to get rid of the make-up during the eighties, then realising that without the strong identification of the visuals, they were just another rock group and so, getting glammed up again pronto.

So we're both right. :)

Here's George Clinton's group "The Parliaments" doing some proper soul, in the 60s

No worries. I'm alone in a sea of specialist music, trying to bring in some tunes and sanity and failing spectacularly.
Nick and DTB down the Lacy Lady in Canvey Island, grooving to all this girlie music is a vision I can't unthink now.

Last night up the pub, what sounded like a medley or best of of Rod Stewart doing his covers of old classics, followed by a what sounded like a best of of Meatloaf. Don't get me wrong I don't necessarily mind either of them in small occasional doses, but not for 3 solid hours.

Appendix: oh and meanwhile, competing with The Voice on the telly in the other bar.

Often thought about trying to do that. Never had any luck, though...
