It's notable in that he didn't do anything that sounded quite like this, either before or after.
I love the sound of the bass guitar ( or is it an upright ? ) played high up.
Isn't there a bass 'solo' on Ballerina, that consists only of one note ?

Are you boys talking Van the Man?

Apart from the album with the Chieftans, which I love, Van M leaves me stone cold sober. Weird....

And I'm not liking EVH oops, laters....

Upright Acoustic I believe, it was played by Richard Davis who (according to stuff I've read over the years) pretty much led the session, hence why the bass is so forwards at times as he's cueing the rest of the musicians at times.

Dunno but a 1 note solo but all over that album I hear it more as a pedal note TBH. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pedal_point

Flippin' awethumne LP IMO.

IMHO.. an underrated narrator of real life in the USA.... I still need to listen to the album he realised on the Inauguration Day of the latest encumberant of the whitehouse back in 2017.

Not even the joyous ‘Jocky Wilson Said (I’m In Heaven When You Smile?)’ :)

I’ve been paying tribute to Alan Freeman’s Saturday afternoon Album Trackin’ Radio One show he used to do way back in the 70s? I made a nice Apple Music playlist including:

Alice Cooper - Hello Hooray
Deep Purple - Woman From Tokyo
Edgar Winter Group - Frankenstein
Nazareth - Broken Down Angel
Free - Wishing Well
Rick Wakeman - Catherine of Aragon.
Steely Dan - Showbiz Kids.
Wishbone Ash - The King Will Come
Santana - Love, Devotion, Surrender.
PFM - Celebration.

All from 1973. I was 15 and had built my first sealed box speaker, connected to the ‘Ext LS’ socket on the mono valve radiogram.
OK I know this list is not really me these days, but the tracks are still bloody superb, regardless. :D
Maybe I’ll try and rediscover this stuff. Age does funny things.

Can't beat a bit of Jake, so many clever songs.

Useless fact of the day - my old structural design lecturer was a folk singer in the 70s and used to do this very song!
