By the way, even if it is great from vinyl on the stereo, on the computer with shitty speakers it doesn't really do that much. The nerve of the music is lost. oh well.

I seem to do a lot of listening on the bus these days. Purely self-defence, really, shutting out the inane mutterings and assorted grunts, farts and occasional screams of my fellow passengers.

This morning it was Unhalfbricking, and it occurred to me that apart from the obvious charms of Sandy Denny, a large part of the charm and success of this album is down to the brilliance of poor Martin Lamble. Have a listen to this, especially the gorgeous cymbals on the wind-down from 10:00 onwards. Delicacy and genius...

Brill track Shane, that arrangement stemmed from a jam I read somewhere. My fave FC album too.

S'been a while since I've heard one of them moments of musical brilliance but here's a cracker.

Right, starts off as nice gently chugging Blues, everythings got it place, nothing to see here...lyrically everythings going awry for poor ol' Boz but listen to what happens in the bass guitar part @ 1.02ish under the hook line. That phrase, its been used before but here it's so simple but soooo effective.

Total awethumnessessness (IMO). I don't know which bassist it is, 2 are listed in the album credits, Freddie Washington and Hutch Hutcherson.

Ooo....Oooooo......Oooooo. Listen to this, 0.00 - 0.36, phwoooaaarrrr, the way all them 'component riff's' all slot together beautifully by 0.42. Thats awethumne (IMO).

Guitar solo ecstasy (IMO).

Short, schweet, perfectly formed and probably very very loud at the time. (...but thats enough about me arf arf arf etc).

2.30 - 3.16 Have a cold flannel ready for the forehead, it really is that good (IMO).

Among the many wonderful things that make up this track, please consider what Michael Karoli and Jaki Leibezeit are doing near the end, from 11:40 :

Keep in mind this is an album from 1974, listen to that guitar riff and sound that comes in at 12.09...its a good riff (IMO) but it got a strange tonality about it, I think its because the guitarist Tony Duhig used to tune his guitar to a 'C' chord (or so I've read).

But at 12.59 on the button...Oh my!


That phrasing, that shift on the basic riff..........phwwwwwwwoooooooooaaaaaaaaarrr! Hark, is that classic proto-death-metal in the making?

Well, I like it anyway.

Patti Smith starts singing 'shadda-do-wop , shadda-do-weh' near the end of 'Birdland' from Horses.
I don't know why it's so moving, but it's some sort of instinctive poetic inspiration.
Perhaps the way it develops ( the vocal harmonies ) marks a spreading balm-like warmth at the end of a tortured story, it just seems right.
