Phil, you should get yourself a reel-to-reel and a couple of mics. You'd be amazed how good a very simple crossed-pair recording can sound.

...and on September 22nd we proudly present internationally acclaimed musician Spiggy Topes on washboard and stirrup pump performing El Cantato Del Marsel Pre Tansato (my washing machine has six cycles) and signing programs afterwards in the vestibule...

True dat.

I had a Yamaha K300 cassette deck and a pair of SM58's which I used perched stage right to record several artists at a club in Bellingham, SE London where I once worked playing vinyl platters for the massed ensemble.

As DTB will testify the Here and Now capture is, uh, how shall we put this? Sonically interesting.

But really, it's amazing how much detail one can capture with the basics.

Today's concert was Early Instruments.

How many can you recognise without resorting to Google ?

Well done ! The shawm was like an early oboe and she had 3 different ones.Normal, tenor and alto.

They were both dressed in medieval clothes which added to the effect.

I studied making early instruments at university, although i concentrated on 14th century guitars.
We shared workshops with the harpsicord, violin and mandolin makers though.

Sort of wished i'd paid attention and kept what i made now :(

Unfortunately the student bar was oposite the workshop

So Graeme, how many pints of snakebite did you get for each reproduction 14thC guitar?

Well, i made 1 guitar in 2 years (they made us work by hand from rough timber).

But, i think probably at least 50% of my time was spent either in the bar or racing motorbikes around the one way system
