#1 Best gig you ever went to in your life?

Post by floppybootstomp »

Apolly olly gees if this been covered before but as the title says, that gig that still resonates your gray matter today.

For me, a strange weekend in 1977, Genesis at Earls Court on Saturday evening (and I hate to admit this but possibly the best gig I've ever been to. I know - sad, heehee) followed by The Stranglers at The Roundhouse the Sunday evening after.

It was in the summertime, as I recall.

There are a 101 nearly-rans but in all honesty that weekend was it for me.

I was there at Earls Court that night! However, in my memory the best gig was Genesis, Lamb Lies Down on Broadway tour, Southampton Gaumont, just a few short weeks before Peter Gabriel left the band (so around 1974 as I recall).

Oooo, many faves, dunno about bestest but...

John Martyn + Danny Thompson at The Ocean, Hackney + JM with full electric band slaying the Cambridge folk festival in the mid 80's.

Brendan Croker and the 5 o'clock Shads at Cambridge FF again.

Bjork @ Wembley, I got choked up during 'Hyperballad', emotionally sooooo intense and personally very applicable at the time.

Jan Garbarek, Eb Weber + Peter Erskine at RFH. Just like hearing sounds you've never imagined possible before.

James Brown + 18 piece band @ some festival, I was in an 'altered state' I confess and totally mesmerised by groove and dance. At the end of his show I was soaked, I hadn't realised it'd been raining for 90 mins... engrossed in sound.

Gong on numerous occasions but 2nd Lundun date last year with Hillage was very very special.

Here and Now, @ The Saxon Tavern, Floppy Boot was DJ-ing actually :-)

Chilli Peppers at Brixton in 1992.

Prince at Wembley in 1991, thought it was gonna be a 'kiddies pop gig', went as there was a ticket going spare, came back totally in awe, saw him again at O2, he IS a true 'Performer'.

Issac Guillory @ a Folk Festival in Lancaster, total pro and amazing guitar techician. He measured the slapback delay from the stage to back of the marquee and adjusted his own delay lines to suit ... then advised PA sound engineer on how to obtain a better sound, not in a big headed way, just solid sound advice. I worked for my ticket and was assigned as his 'personal roadie' for the gig, I'd just split up with a girlfriend and went solo road trippin', ended up at the festival. I loved his playing with Al Stewart and told him so, as a ta he gave me 2 of his solo Lp's and signed 'em saying thanks for all the help :-) Sweet fella sadly killed by Cancer.

Many many others.

Any one of about 30 gigs at the Vandike in Plymouth, but especially Free, March 1970. Didn't know about rock until that moment. Life-changing...

Youve probably seen these before cos I do tend to harp on about it a bit:

Is there more than one ?

This one was near Oxford, just north a bit from memory. (it was mid 80's)

Hmm, I'd never cottoned on to the fact that Bethel was just off the A40...

The Woodstock I'm talking about is within sight of Blenheim Palace. It's the Royal Manor of Woodstock.

Was it in that pub by the canal?

The gig

I suppose the gig should really have been described as being in the grounds of Blenheim Palace, there were thousands there as befits an international superstar.

Had one hell of a job getting out afterwards, never known such crowds.

I've seen about three quarters of the bands in DTB's flyer pic, probably around that time as well.

Yes at the Royal Festival Hall supporting The Nice; Family at The Lyceum Sunday evening, Audience several times at the Marquee in Wardour Street and many more.

Dang, I'm going all misty eyed
