Yep. And it's 18:15 here on our equivalent of a Friday, so I'm going home...

Ramadan in a few days, then everything REALLY stops...

How delightful! I spent the last week of Ramadan in a tiny hotel in the Khan el Khalili bazaar in Cairo a good few years ago. How we rejoiced when it was time for Eid.

Eid can be a bit mental - over here people get given cars. A lot. So it's a great time to look at the pre-owned market for the spare Ferrari or Lambo... there's always a lot of LandCruisers & Nissan Patrols for sale during Eid, lots...

Ramadan is actually OK - a lot of bars & clubs do go "dry" for the moment, and women in particular (including tourists) are expected to dress "modestly" and behave "with decorum" - you cannot hold hands or kiss in public, nor drink or eat anything during daylight hours without exemption. No visible smoking either.

Main thing is just never ever take a taxi in the afternoon - the drivers are bad enough anyway, but when they're overheated, tired, dehydrated and low on sugars, they can be plain dangerous...

Your last point reminds me of the Yemen! Perhaps it was all a bit mental, all the time.

I wonder how people get on not being able to eat or drink for hours on end - especially in northern latitudes and particularly those with conditions like diabetes. Last I heard was that scholars were still debating making allowances for people living in countries like Norway where daylight hours are so prolonged.

If you are unwell, and diabetes counts, as does having a period, then you don't have to fast. Or so I'm told

Just imagine, for example , sitting your exams during Ramadan - larks... NOT.

Illness, old age, very young, diabetes, pregnant, travelling etc. - all are exempt.

This is very good, I got a link to it from someone at work.
I think my favourite is the Cameron Diaz one.
It reminds me of a very good book that was around 30 or 40 years ago, a collection of newspaper headlines & clippings, in a book by 'Private Eye' . That had the classic headlines 'Police shot man with knife' and 'Police found safe under blanket'.

I had/have a Private Eye book of photos sent in by readers from their travels here and abroad. A very amusing book.
