You can make very smart boxes out of unused fr4 (solder the edges together on the inside)... Solder your nuts into the corners (queue DtB) and round off the edges... Spray black and Robert's your father's brother...

Or spray it a nice fleshy pink like the chip basket...

Pressed into tupperware or similar as a mould, could be very smooth.

I've toyed with using papier mache for speaker cabinets before. There are some proprietary mixes around with plaster filler that are meant to be excellent for a finish and hard too.

I’ve abandoned covers altogether. I took the tatty old labels off the chokes and they actually don’t look bad at all.

I keep thinking about doing Steampunk amps. One of these days I’m going to go to town with it. Valves and Steampunk are obvious bedfellows.

Here are the schematics for the audio circuit and the power supplies.
The power supplies are old school, no regulation as there is a limit to what can be squoze onto a stereo chassis of a reasonable size. Besides, I don’t have enough HT for that sort of stuff.

There is no doubt room for improvement: for example, the driver stage bias voltage could be tweaked by a couple volts to get it dead centre, for absolute max clean swing, but it’s not far out, so it’ll do for now. Remember also that this is built out of donated PCBs, one of a pair of Sowter chokes that Mr I gave me a very good deal on, and whatever else I had to hand. Consequently, some parts in the power supplies are OK, whilst others are stupidly over-specced, but you work with what you’ve got when you’re on a budget.


I’ve also after the fact, seen this on DIYAudio...“NEVER put an interstage transformer or plate choke inside a global feedback loop” but there don’t seem to be any problems with my plate choke setup, probably because there is no output transformer sticking its oar in. Apart from the potential to tweak the driver bias, the audio circuit performs quite nicely.
The feedback level has been doubled to drop the gain and further clean the window into the performance. Both the doubling of the feedback and the triple power supply came about after visiting and talking with Steve a few weeks ago.

For sound per pound, this is a good value amp.
