What you have there Simon, is technically known as a "flooder' by American omni fans, basically because it "floods' the room with sound, which is exactly what you want in your kitchen situation.

My bigger omni project is going to be a flooder.
Flooders can be as low as only a foot high off the floor and still produce a proper height image if the top face is angled right, but I'm not going as short as that.

I made good progress at the weekend. I tidied up the edges and filled, then two coats of undercoat, smidge more filler, and then the eggshell topcoat. Fortunately it was just mild enough to paint in the garage. The finish isn't bad, but I can see why a piano black finish is so demanding.

Attached is a photo - I'm pretty pleased how how well it's blended in :-)

Well done Simon, it blends in fantastically well. :)

If I didn't know better I'd say it was invisible.

Good innits?! :-D

Okay here's the real one. Needs a white cloth grill but it's not too bad. The Overseeing Organisation was perhaps less enthusiastic.

I presume it's flooding quite nicely.

The Overseeing Organisation is off out in a mo and has just taken a photo so her friends can have a laugh...

Yep, spreads the sound well. It's hooked up to an old Denon all in one job. The speakers reveal its limitations shall we say.

I covered the baffle grille yesterday with white cloth. I'm very pleased I gave the mdf two coats of undercoat as it shows through every blemish ruthlessly. I'm pleased enough with how it turned out though. When I pointed it out to the Overseeing Organisation there was a rather underwhelming "oh yeah"

I finally got my hands on the Allo Boss DAC after two previous failed attempts. It simply plugs in to the Pi, and I was quite surprised how much better it is than the stock Pi audio out. Nice.
