Omni sound is quite versatile. Seems like an ideal solution for the kitchen system. It'll allow an even soundfield all over the room, as you've found with the cardboard lash up. There's a lot to be said for even soundfields.simon wrote: ↑Thu Nov 23, 2017 10:59 pm
I varied the angle of the baffle between the drivers firing straight up at the ceiling to firing straight forward and overall I reckon I prefer approximately 30 degrees to horizontal, but I don't think there's a right or wrong, just a preference.
Firing forward the treble was probably the most detailed and direct, but the kitchen is 6.4m long and 2.7m wide with the fridge near the middle of a long wall so the sound wasn't the best at the ends of the room.
Firing upwards the sound was quite diffuse, so much more even around the room. Interestingly the sound was more directional when stood directly in front of the fridge.
~30 degrees had the best compromise for me - even sound throughout the kitchen without directionality but retaining a good amount of the treble goodness. Steve's adventures in Omni land are well observed.
The cabinet will be a bit more fiddly to build though.

Yes, I've been mulling this over for a while and it just seemed to make sense. The lash up last night was perhaps more successful than I expected.Cressy Snr wrote: ↑Fri Nov 24, 2017 12:56 pm Omni sound is quite versatile. Seems like an ideal solution for the kitchen system. When did 5751s get so expensive?! I started at Langrex and by the time I'd looked at some American sellers Langrex didn't look so bad...
I'll have to see what I've got in stock, but I might need to rethink the driver stage. D3a has similar gain but they're not so cheap anymore either. Hmm.

I've got some old Hitachi short bottle ones you can have Simon.
I've no use for them. They're used but still work fine.

The tube manual is quite like a telephone book. The number of it perfect. It is useful to make it possible to speak with a girl. But we can't see her beautiful face from the telephone number

6SL7's not a bad shout. Never used them so I don't have any but thanks for the offer Steve (and Andrew). I'll have a look at some curves later. (Valves curves Dave, valves )

Isn't the 6SL7 a bit wimpy for a driver? It only pulls 1 maybe 2mA at a push.
