Curious. Just tried opening them again and they open fine. They were out of order last time, but now they're in the correct alphanumeric order. Shit happens.
I renamed some of the files so they went in the right order.
.

cheers,

Yesterday I took delivery of an excellent solid-state phono stage, which for me provides a reference against which to measure my own work. It sounds superb and TBH, it's going to take some doing to get near its performance with my own efforts. However, with phono stages, that's the standard we have to work to, if vinyl is not to be p*ssed all over by digital and as ever I'm always up for a challenge. I naively thought I'd get it right pretty
quickly......er...no

My own vinyl reproduction chain is now so far ahead of my digital, it is laughable. Just as the saying goes, there's nothing worse than an ex smoker, there's nothing worse than a born again vinylista.

Can you tell us what this new phono stage is Steve ?

Hi Mark,

I was looking at your schematic for the J-FET/triode phono-stage as I am interested in hearing a phono-stage without the use of SUT's. I was wondering with the 2SK369's did you use the GR or BL versions? The BL takes more IDSS (8.0-16.0mA). I found some BL versions at sensible prices, but wan tot check they are the right ones first!

Also how did you match them and how close did you think they need to be?

Any thoughts gratefully received.
Cheers

I'm racking my brains now Ian, and I think what happened was Nick gave me a few, because he'd been using them on his original phono stage which uses this sort of arrangement with ECC88 on top. He may be able to advise , but I'll have a rummage back in that thread and see if I made any notes. Details of the current etc will be there , would have been about 12ma total through the E180F probably, so 6ma per jFet.

6mA per jFET was what I found in the thread. I couldn't find any info on the GR BL issue. The BL version that I could find was nearly twice the price of the GR and given I need to buy at least 10 to match it would be far more economical if the GR's were ok. Though of course if they are inferior then I will have to pay the extra.

If the total current is 12mA and the GR version are ok for 10-20mA is there a way of using a single jFET to take the full current?

Cheers

I think the GR ones may well be good enough and you can get more or them, to select characteristics. It was interesting having a look at that thread - quite a scene there with JC and Joe Roberts for a while !
I can't remember exactly why two jFets were necessary, bit knackered today to be honest, brain dead, perhaps I'll remember tomorrow with some discussion with Nick. Probably 12mA was pushing it for one device.

Well worth doing though, as the limitations of step-ups with cartridges like the 103 and 103R were driven home. The bass was a revelation - especially with the 103. The voltage across the jFet was very important regarding vocal tone though, so read those bits of the thread carefully.
Probably best bring up that thread for further discussion on this specific issue .

This DIY lark is all well and good but why spend decades fannying about with something that may sound crap when its done?

Just curious.

1. Its fun
2. Its cheaper
3. Its what you want, not what someone else wants you to have

Of course, not everyone can, but those that can, why the hell not :-)

Just in case it doesn't, I suppose.
The world looks so different after learning science. For example, trees are made of air, primarily. When they are burned, they go back to air, and in their flaming heat is released the flaming heat of the Sun which was bound in to convert air into tree.
