#1 Ant Woodwork 300b

Post by Nick »

Just finished this 300b amp using SP Wound iron and circuit, Front Panel Designer top plate and our own Ant's woodwork.

Neat as a neat thing.
The world looks so different after learning science. For example, trees are made of air, primarily. When they are burned, they go back to air, and in their flaming heat is released the flaming heat of the Sun which was bound in to convert air into tree.

Hello Nick,
I notice you have the output transformers spaced up off the chassis. Is this for sound quality reasons ?

Nice one Nick and Ant.

Has this gone to the new owner Nick or will you be bringing this to Owston?
It would be interesting comparing to the interstage monoblocs you designed for me if we get the chance?

Very nice. So many questions!

Using Front Panel Nick, is there a facility for it to work out how to make the holes for the countersunk screws, or did you have to work it out? Trial and error?

It's a very impressive fit between chassis and top plate - a quality job by Ant, very impressed indeed.

I'll make a wild guess and say the nuts below hold the stack together and if you take them off, i.e. to mount it flush, it will fall to bits because of the air gap

Very smart indeed ~ is this anything like the, er, what was it, 300PSE ?

Just spending lunchtime browsing through the ccts on the SP Wound site, there's a great quote... "...this amp should provide 9W/channel in Class A but there is quite a lot more available if a blind eye is turned to distortion." :-) I like that.

I've recently bought 2 pairs of 300B's as I've never done a 300B amp of any sort before and wanted to see what the fuss was all about. The IT coupled 6C45Pi driven version is very similar to what I'm using in my main 2A3 amp at the moment. I'll add that to the project list then.

That is a fantastic job. Definately a good method.

I like this new method for power ratings.
Sort-of reminds me of those 1000w USB powered computer speakers you see in shops occasionally.

Nice build, Nick & Ant.

Has it been connected to some speakers yet?

We had to start doing this nonsense while I was still at Maplin.

There was a formula for it.

IIRC, take the rms power.

Double it for peak power.

Double it again for peak-to-peak power. (??!!)

Double it again 'cause there's 2 speakers.

Ergo 5W PC speakers end up as being written as 40 Watts.
