Thanks all, very much appreciated!

The world looks so different after learning science. For example, trees are made of air, primarily. When they are burned, they go back to air, and in their flaming heat is released the flaming heat of the Sun which was bound in to convert air into tree.

Even more disturbing than that, I recognise it as a My Little Pony cos-play costume - at least that's what it looks like.

Hey, Matt here aka 'the newbie'.
First up, thanks for the transformers, got them sat here with me now - they're much larger (and heavier) than I was expecting!
And thanks everyone for their input - this is definitely a very newbie build, luckily I've got Shane steering the ship. Thought it might be easier to start uploading here rather than bugging him on text messages.
I'm sure there'll be plenty of mistakes, please correct me as I go and I'll try and keep it all documented here. Not sure if this is the best place for a build thread so let me know if I should start fresh else where.
So... parts wise, so far, I've got:
- The 2 mains transformers (thank Mike / Dave)
- The 2 output transformers (thanks Shane)
- 2 EF86 input valves (fresly arrived from Russia today)
- 4 6550 output valves (thanks Shane)
- Phono sockets (thanks Shane)
- 4 B9A sockets
Things I need:
- 2 12AX7's (need to get these ordered - any suggestions?)
- General passive components - is there somewhere best to get these? I'm guessing these need to be higher standard than general eBay specials
For the power supply, Shane said something along the lines of I'd need a solid state rectifier due to the transformers... but I can't remember why? The more glowy bits the better... obviously. Is it because there's no 5v windings for the heaters? Is there any schematics for some suitable psu's? The ones I've been looking at are all with valve rectifiers.
I've got a plan for the case, but I'm not sure how feasible or practical it will be so I'll get a prototype made and upload some pics.
Thanks again for the parts and the help this far!
Matt

Welcome, glad you got the TX's OK. S'funny, I checked with Shane they'd arrived OK this morning.
12AX7 is also known as ECC83, they're still being made, hence, 'cheap' and not rare E.g. ->http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PAIR-Shuguang ... fresh=true

Ah good. You've joined. With me steering the ship, you're going to need all the help you can get!
Yes, you're right. For valve rectification you'd need a 5v winding and also a centre tap on the ht secondary, but I don't think solid state rectification is necessarily a bad thing, done properly.
Looking forward to seeing your chassis ideas! I did notice a certain resistance on Jenny''s part to monoblocs...

Could do a hybrid bridge with a couple of 1n4007 and an ez81 if the 6.3v heater winding for the ecc83 will stand the extra current, will get the soft start that way

The EZ81 was the big brother to the EZ80 full wave rectifier, giving 150 mA against the 90 mA for the EZ80.
The maximum reservoir capacitor was 50 µF and the minimum series resistance had to be 240 Ohms per anode.
Would 150ma be enough ?
I might have a used Hammond 5v transformer somewhere if interested.
