I still miss my 1985 520i. It was 8 years old when I got it and 18 when it went to car heaven. Apart from fuel it cost me next to nothing, and I could still put a spanner on it myself if I needed to. I still haven't got used to front wheel drive really, though it would have been awful this winter. A...

Well, if we are allowed a 5687, first stage 15k, 330R on cathode with a bypass, directly coupled to second half of 5687 standing on a 9k1 bypassed cathode resistor, loaded with a 50H then a cap to the 2a3 works nicely. I rather like the sound of that - must make a note somewhere (that I'll find aga...

This chap does all sorts - I've used him before and got a few of various types for stock. Works out much cheaper than buying here. But depends how many you need.

Just to clarify, the inputs were earthed originally, but not when I had the C3g on its own as they were earthed from the Aikido board. Having finished my decorating and plumbing duties I had a few more minutes to play and I think there's some progress. :) Rationalising the earthing things are much i...

The Aikido is an All in One, so the HT and heater reg are on the board. I disconnected the HT from the board but for simpicity I left the Aikido heaters wired up but took the valves out. So the heater reg was on but no valves to heat. Other than that only the C3g was connected. Hmmm, it occurs to me...

Blimey Mike, gizza chance! The clue was in my original post - it's only taken me 18 months to start to get this in a box. What chance of fixing the hum over a busy weekend? Nick and Andrew have eloquently explained why we've used a C3g in a phono. You really must come to a fest sometime to hear some...

Are the red Wima caps recommended for this board? They were rather poor in my digital experiments a while back, but could be totally different in this application. They're what JRB supplied. He does various options - I went for all the bits with the pcb, except for audio resistors and coupling caps...

Have you got a big cap and a small-ish R, say 1k to put in the regged supply B+, see if it is the source of the problem. Basically, I'm after putting a bit of extra smoothing on the HT there. We can permanently fix this when we know its the culprit, but let's find the 'smoking gun' first. Adding 2 ...
